Why do we buy DVD's?

I was standing infront of my several DVD racks last night and the thought came to me, why do we buy DVD's? I mean, I know a lot of us buy them because we want to watch the special features, we love the movie, or we just like to collect them. What is the point, I have over 800 DVDs and I have no idea why, a good portion I've watched like 5 times and that is it. Yet, I spend so much money on them.

Anyway, just curious as to the point of buying them? I will continue to do so, just wondering everyone elses opinon.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I see no point in buying a DVD when you can just join NetFlix for the cost of what you might spend on 1 DVD per month. If you have to watch something right now I would just rent it locally or get it "on demand" from cable.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

My dvd buying has definately slowed since blockbuster.com but I still tend to buy one a month (used to be a couple a week).

Just wait till they go the way of the vhs. My folks have trunks filled with movies (many i bought as a kid) and we end up renting the dvd before playing the tape.

I buy DvDs because I like watching a movie once at home and spending money to never watch it again.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I used to enjoy watching movies over and over again. Not so much anymore. These days I just get them through blockbuster.com. I only buy complete season's of television shows on DVD now.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

DVD's make it easy to always have it, I have a lot less than most people, but still around 500. Some are pretty obscure, not that some mail-order DVD thing might not have it but many cannot be found at Blockbusters. If I want to watch a movie right now, I don't want to drive to Blockbuster or wait a day or two to get it in the mail. Also, I am a big fan of Disney and since they are limited release, I want to have them for my kids someday. Plus if you are going to rent something like twice/thrice, it is cheaper to own it.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

Our type of people (by that I mean BOTLs) are collectors by nature...DVD's are just another type of collection...cigars, pens, watches, comic books, guns, wines, beers...i know I'm missing a bunch, but you get the point...

I like to think it's an admirable personailty trait...to appreciate something and pursue it to its end, then to be able to discuss and share the collection with others that will enjoy and appreciate what you've assembled...after all, that's all this site is is a collection of collectors brought together over the shared common experience of a fine cigar...

So don't wonder why you have so many DVD's...sit back an enjoy your hobby, your collection, your accomplishment...once you're satisfied with what you've assembled (and our types rarely are), you'll move on to another pursuit and begin anew...

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

Personally, I won't buy a DVD unless the special effects are spectacular or a movie really speaks to me. I threw away over 500 VHS tapes that I paid a ton of $ for. Now DVDs are kind of pointless since I can watch movies for the same cost as blockbuster rents them for on my cable box. With the advent of iTunes movie rentals, while not perfect, I don't think I'll be buying any mroe DVDs. Even Blu-Ray disks. Why have a hard copy when I can buy a TB drive for $300 to store movies on. in two years that will be 10-50 TB or more. The days of hard media are passing. Get on the new band-wagon and save your money for vacations.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I buy dvds every now and then, but I've also cut down big time. I've been renting more from Netflix and watching movies instantly online (my comp is hooked up to my projector.) That seems like the best value to me and leaves more money to spend on cigars and other cool stuff

When I buy dvds there is usually a special reason such as:
independent horror not available on netflix
out of print dvd not on netflix
bootleg dvd of vhs (never released on dvd)

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I don't.
Been with Netflix for over 5 years and this works great for us. Other than the occasional channel surfing on Sunday and running across Jaws, 3 Days of the Condor, Alien (s) or Jeremiah Johnson....I can't think of the last time I watched a movie twice.

I think I own 20 DVD's - all of them concert videos
