Spring has Sprung: Turkey Vultures Return to Nash County
Ah, Spring ~ (photo by Marie Freeman): turkey buzzards return to Nash County, NC, looking for something dead to pick apart. One of the loveliest gliders at a distance, they're about the most disgusting looking bird I know when you get up close. They mark return of warm weather and, of course, the yard 'gar.
![]() They are circling town right now but I can't get a picture. Pretty at 1000 feet. Sometimes I see them sitting on the ground (or on fences) along the side of the road, dozens of the nasty buggars (like the pic above), wings extended and all bug-eyed. Just looking at you. Sometimes hopping around on their revolting feet - wings extended - leaning into the wind. In Knightdale, NC, they gather high atop the watertower and stare out, looking for something to get hit by a car on US Hwy 64. Ah.... spring.

Disgusting creatures... but they do a service getting rid of all that roadkill in Wendell/Knightdale. You guys certainly get more than your share of that!
![]() Time to meet at Cup O' Joes for another coffee and a smoke, my friend.

We have them stay in the area year round. Amazing what they can do to a resteraunt dumpster if the kitchen help forgets to close it. Hideous creatures up close.

Re: Spring has Sprung: Turkey Vultures Return to Nash County
Same here. I swear, at times they don't appear to be looking for food but just having the best of times catching thermals like some kind of bio-kite. Amazing creatures, some of the best recyclers around. Although the ones around here won't touch a road-kill skunk.
![]() ![]() On the other hand the hummingbirds are starting to show up. When they reach peak levels I will be putting out a gallon of simple syrup every other day. 20-30 feeding at once, like some kind of helicopter war zone in stereo.
