Re: Long drives
One very minor thing that I notice is that my wallet throws everything out of whack. It's not stuffed or anything. It just has a few cards and rarely has cash in in it. However, on long drives, if I forget to take it out of my back pocket, I notice that it causes back pain and also makes my leg go to sleep. Small thing, but that could help too. I too have a bad back (fused L4L5) that acts up on occasion. Although my problem is standing for long periods of time.

Re: Long drives
Sean, you might also simply check to see if your seat is properly adjusted, with the front portion of the seat bottom supporting your legs properly. You need to check to see that your steering, if telescopic, is adjusted properly, as well as the tilt function, your seat back inclination level, and your seat/pedal distance. Far too often, people do not adjust their seats properly, and this stresses different portions of the anatomy, affecting not only concentration, but contributing to accelerated fatigue. Often, what looks "cool" is what is giving you a pain in the neck, or back, or seat, or leg. Much like a competitive sport, prior stretching before a long drive can help alleviate injury or discomfort.
It's all about ergonomics, and your height doesn't help you much in that car designed in the far east for generally shorter people. Work with the adjustments you have, and go from there. I have actually been toying with the idea of installing a couple of washers and using slightly extended bolts in my wifes car to change its range of motion, allowing a higher seat angle for my legs, yet still have the capability of fitting my wife properly, I am 6'1", she is 5'4", quite a range for a seat to accomodate, considering the seat pad itself has a static dimension.

Re: Long drives
I just got home from a weekend trip to San Francisco, and I know what you're talking about. I don't get it in my lower back, I get it in my knee and hip. Its a bummer, but it could be worse I supose.
