Sitting at Orlando airport and just found out they stopped selling gum! This is stupid to me and sounds like they might be paranoid because maybe somehow a terrorist could use it to take over a plane. Anyways, I find gum essential to flying because I have a serious problem with my ears popping during the flight. Anyone else hear of this?

Boon: I have the same problem with my ears! I just got back from a flight, but I purchased my gum before arriving at the airport, so I didn't notice. What a bummer!

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
I need gum too in order to handle the pressure changes. I always have 2-3 packs on me at any time. Besides, I couldn't afford to buy gum at the airport.

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
Great!!! Now gum is hazardous contraband
I've said for years the gum lobby doesn't have enough power in Washington and this goes to prove it.

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
Has nothing to do with safety, for many years airports have not been selling gum to ease the cleaning of it.

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
I don't know about Wrigleys Spearmint or Big Red being a dangerous weapon but, does anyone remember the gum that used to come in the Tops baseball card packs?
Now that stuff was dangerous! Could definitely be used as a bladed weapon. Or a thrown weapon (shuriken).

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
I too am a person who needs gum for flights, my ears cannot handle pressure changes. Sometimes even the gum won't help and I will have to wait hours or even days for it to equal out again. Personally, I have never been in an airport where if I needed gum didn't have it, I do make sure to have my own most of the time though.
Although I am not condoning this by any means, I suspect it may have nothing to do with security and more to do with problems with gum being stuck in carpets or under seats in the terminals and on airplanes. For example, a casino I frequent will not sell gum in their gift shop because they got sick of cleaning it out of the carpets, so they choose not to sell it to help alleviate some of the problem. ![]()

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
Same thing at staten island ferry terminal in NYC after redoing it.
Reason: so skels dont stick it on seats, spit it on floors...etc. Did they just renovate Orlando Airport? I guess this crazy policy is catching on. |

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
Boon: I had a busted ear drum compliments of my older brother and I went to the doc cause I couldn't handle the pain some time I just wanted to scream on flights and I'm on to many of them.I hate the drug thing but start taking SUFID 2 days before flying .It works great I also have those flying earplug for back up,lucky I haven't needed them yet .Good Luck
The ear plug cost about $600.00 at the airport and $7.99 at the local pharmacy

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
That is absolutely true, and several major airports have done it the past several years...I need it too, so I always stop on the way to the airport.

Re: Airport has stopped selling GUM!
any flight over ten hours get to me. i grew up on plains hoping around on AF plains. if you have ever done that your ears are the last thing you care about cus you are on the floor or on net seat. forget about the bath room, cus what we used was called a hony bucket. when ever we did overseas (24hour) flights your ears would start to hurt then stop
