Firefox vs. Flock web browser

I've been using Netscape for years and am now using version 8.1.3. I get a pop up saying Netscape no longer supports N.S. and it wants me to migrate to "Flock". I do use I.E. for some applications that wouldn't run well on Netscape (like Club Stogie) but always liked Netscape better because it ran faster and, probably more importantly, it's what I'm used to.

I did a little googling on Flock. I don't " blog, use Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and other services." All I want is a danged web brower. I use G-mail and run it through Thunderbird. I do like tabbed browsers (and haven't updated I.E. to the tabbed version as I was afraid something would screw up. (Sometimes, "new and improved", isn't.)

It seems like I've been getting lock-ups with Netscape more recently and hope whatever I switch to will be better.

So, "Flock" or "Firefox"? What the "word in the jungle"?

I'm not familiar with Flock, but Firefox works pretty well. I prefer Opera, it's got alot of similarities with Firefox, but I like the interface a little more, and it seems a little faster to me.

Yeah, Opera is fast, but I love Firefox for the search feature. Instead of popping up a search window, a little tiny bar appears at the bottom. Then it real time searches as you type. So you usually don't have to type the whole word to find what you are looking for.

Re: Firefox vs. Flock web browser

I use Firefox mainly because I'm used to it. Tried Flock and didn't like it but I don't recall why. It was quite a while back so maybe I would now. I like Opera and have been using it off and on for years, even when the free version had adverts. I've used Sea Monkey in the past and its fine. Usually use Safari on my Macbook but also have Opera and Firefox as well. On one of my Linux boxes I use Firefox with the 3.0 Netscape theme that brings back the old days when I used Netscape over IE.

I'm on Sea Monkey right now, giving it a week. It has a few nice features that I wish FF had. but I still might go back to FF

Re: Firefox vs. Flock web browser

I have been using Opera for a long time now, and would never go back to any of those others. The thing I like best is the tab feature at the top of the page, and being able to go backwards and forwards through pages with the z and x keys. You can also tab through open links with the number keypad. Very cool, and very fast!!

There you go brother! Good luck in your quest.

I have been an Opera guy for a long time, but the new version of fire Fox smokes it. Faster and more stable. I have both on my main PC but I haven't used opera in awile. The newest version is still in beta and they have some bugs to work!

Same here, been using FF for some time now and love it.

Fresh install is great and if you are into changing it up there are a ton of cool add ons.

FF is the way to go. The Add Ons are awesome. Foxmarks is a great bookmark tool that keeps you bookmarks on a server and you can download them at any computer your on. It also synchronizes your bookmarks as well. Not too mention Firefox has automatic Spell Check that will underline the word and offer corrections just like MS Word. Best Browser out there.

Re: Firefox vs. Flock web browser

Here's SS of my firefox. I LOVE firefox! It's much safer than IE, plus it allows so much more features to be added thru "addons"--that's a lot of what I got in the boxes, but there's a lot that you can't see. I've got one that allows me to open IE tabs also within firefox itself. So I hardly ever open IE. Also, another called snaplinks that lets me rightclick and highlight multiple links to open all at once in new tabs--works amazing in google-search when searching for a new place to buy stogies .

Also, there's one addon that is a must--Greasemonkey. It lets you add user-scripts that basically make the web your own. For example, there's some webpages that no matter what you do, it won't store your username/password. I don't have that problem anymore. I never click to the next page in google search or photobucket because of pagerization--it just opens the next page as I scroll down, making the search into one long page.

There is so much customization with firefox, but even it's built in features make it usable straight from download. (Sweet, mailman just knocked on the door--pipe from Frenchy's is here!!).

But if you don't go with firefox, I've got to mention Opera. It has a lot of the features that firefox doesn't have that you get w/extensions and greasemonkey. It's my 2nd in command browser, as I hate using IE, and it works whenever firefox doesn't. So in all honesty, i'd try them both and go from there!

Re: Firefox vs. Flock web browser

Oh, meant to say, on the permatabs addon--it keeps the links permanently on what you got it set. I've got gcalender, greader, gmail open in 3 and those stay open 24/7. Plus if you click a link in that window, it opens into another, so you never navigate away from the page (and you can set it to where it opens in a background window). Also, a lot of opera's features, firefox uses addons to compensate (like the speeddial--i've got a window w/25 links set as speeddial).
