Way back there was an urban legend/myth about the tobacco company putting shards of glass in the snus to help cut the inside of the lip to deliver nicotine more efficiently, but what can sometimes look like shards are crystallised salt.

I thought that they used fiberglass. I thought that that was what accounted for the price difference in a can of Cope vs Grizzly. Cope=more tobacco and Grizzly=more fiberglass. That's what I've heard. I remember when I was a kid this guy did a presentation on the dangers of dip at a hospital my class visited and listed rat poison as an ingredient but I don't remember if fiberglass was one or not.

haha.. are you really sure?

The myth about rat poison could possibly have its roots in similar chemicals found in tobacco (smoke) and poison, I think there's a minute amount of arsenic in cigarette smoke, apart from all the other poisonous chemicals.

Not sure that there are any arsenic or other poisons other than nicotine in snus though.

I bought some more snus today. "General" brand. I got white portion, instead of the regular - the only difference i can notice is that it's in a white pouch, instead of a brownish one.

Any other differences?

Yes, the white portion has a bit more salt in it as a taste enhancer. Otherwise its the same.

I generally go for white portion, and actually have a general white in right now

So in the US where is the best place to buy snus. Would the local B&M have it or should I turn to the internet.

I've said it before, but I can't blame ya for missing it - this thread has grown quite large and popular . Anyway, out of the three B&Ms around my house, only one sells snus. But according to the owner, who I talked to today (when I was buying snus!), the product has grown quite popular. Sales had tripled at his two stores in the past 5 months. People have started to make standing orders for 4 or 5 containers a month. It's addicting.

I've spoken out against Camel and Marlboro snus in the past, on this thread, but I may have to change my opinion a little. Yes, camel and marlboro snus is less powerful - and the taste isn't as good as General. But, the price has recently been slashed by two thirds. I purchased it for 6 dollars a few months ago - in the past two or three weeks, it dropped to two. Two dollars for 16 pouches (marlboro only - I don't know if camel's has dropped.) It's a good price. You may be able to find some of the camel and marlboro at a 7-11... if you live near a test market.

If you can't find it at your local B&M (don't stray too far from your hometown to find it... we've got internet now!) and you don't want to find/ don't like the american varieties, search the internet. Look for General-brand, portion snus to start. As for sites and what not... I can't help you out. Never bought it on the net before. My price at the local B&M is a little below 5 dollars for 24 pouches - look for around that price i guess?

There is a good portion of the swedish population (especially in my town, because it is mostly industrial factory workers) that uses a can a day, two portions at a time sometimes. 4-5 a month is nothin. I use four to five a month, and I wouldn't even call myself a snuser.

I would definitely not suggest starting with general unless you are a daily cigarette smoker. It is way too strong in the viatmin N department for a first time snus-er. I would suggest starting with something like Kronan, Göteborg's Rapé (No.2 Lingon if they got it, its pretty mild) or anything in a mini pouch, just while you get used to it. I use general now, and I like the flavor but it is very strong. Ettan is probably the best tasting snus out there, along with Röda Lacket. You may want to start with a white portion simply because the brown portions look pretty nasty when you first start out snusing. Bridges - PM me if you have any questions, or if you want me to send you a starter pack

-Mark

Re: Snus - A Second Newbies Perspective

So, thanks to Mark's generosity (thanks again, Mark!) I am now sampling some General (GREAT flavor) and Kronan. More later...

Re: Snus - A Second Newbies Perspective

Just to be clear...

The portion is meant to go between the cheek and upper gums, right? Toward the back of the mouth or at the front?

I am getting a LOT of juice with it toward the back of the mouth, and it's resulting in a pretty intense nicotine high.

I put mine right up in the front. I'm snus-ing right now, as a matter of fact
