I own a kilt...but it is far too old to wear...it was my great great great grandfathers...amazingly still in pretty good shape...I was thinking about buying one myself for formal events...and of course, should I make the mistake, wear one for my wedding...

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

that is one of my pet peeves.. people who wear kilts who were born in America..

I can't stand it.

I am of strong Irish Decent, however If I went to Ireland and said that I was Irish, theyd laugh in my face. I maybe of Irish decent, but that doesn't make me Irish!

I say let the scottish keep their traditions, and the american's keep theirs. It would be like going to japan and seeing someone dress up in fancy cowboy clothes or something. Even if their great great grandfather was Wyatt Earp, it would just seem wrong.

i know this will piss people off, and I would refrain from posting, but it bothers me that much.

I totally agree with you, and will stop eating any kind of ethnic foods, refrain from any generational traditions, and so forth. All these people with tattoos aren't even Polynesian, fer chrissakes!!!

And whats with the whole backwards ball cap thing? Are these guys all catchers? Sub commanders?

Pet peeves should be kenneled for many, don't you think? The ball cap thing is funny though, I just think that wearing one cocked sideways or backwards makes someone either look like a moronic wannabe thug, or a drunken moronic fratboy...(and if you are over 25... first of all, do you realize that even when you were younger it looked moronic? And you look sillier now?)

Edit:
WAAAITTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then there is the whole "athletic" shoe thing!!! Who do these people think they are wearing running shoes to their local Krispy Kreme??
Look at that dude!! He hasn't come close to a jog in 3 decades and he is wearing "GASP" Cross-trainers!!!!!!

Ohh, the humanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, that was coffee-on-the-monitor funny.

Tell you what, Nicholas: I've been meaning to get a kilt in recognition of my lineage in the Kerr clan (lowland Scots); what say we find a few other like-minded individuals and put together a kilt herf! But I'm serious, too. Info on my clan and tartan here - clicky

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

The function of carrying on traditions from family to family or generation to generation is a proud heritage that should be continued on. It offers us the individuality that makes each one of us unique. This Great country protected by all those who serve in the military and are unfortunately being killed daily allow us the opportunity to carry on these traditions in this country with out fear of being prisoned or shot. So if I want to wear a kilt of my heritage even though I don't live in my homeland is my choice and I'm dam glad I can and I can teach the younger generations about family and what our family stands for

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

I see a fair share of kilts here. Even more in Scotland.

What I find interesting is people's latching on to clan or family tartans. It's a fairly new development to identify a tartan with a family, and I believe the tradition started with giving the Prince of Wales one and making it personal. Then everyone wanted their own special one too.

There's some Scottish in my mom's family, and I often have a lot of scotch in me.

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

I bought a Utilikilt two years ago and have worn it camping and to festivals/fairs. It is not my heritage but I was sold on the comfort angle but I'm too big around and have to keep pulling it up so I don't have any plans to continue wearing it. Funny looks from people have not influenced this decision cause I don't usually care what other people think

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

Go for it, I not only wear a kilt but wear it all the time, I currently own 5, 1 Is an Irish County Sligo Tartan, 1 is a straight up plain black wool dress kilt, 1 is Camo (Yes camo), and I have 2 Utilikils, 1 Black Original and 1 Workmans (Waiting on delivery now). I wear my tartan kilt whenenver I play with pipers and I also wore a full Prince Charlie outfit (That I own) which is the ultimate in dress kilt packages to my wedding (It was hand made in Glasgow). Like many I also wear mine to music events, festivals, fairs etc. but I also wear them when I play with my rock band, while I work security at a local club (Amazingly enough no one ever gets out of hand on the nights that I work), run out to the store or while just kicking around the house or my back deck with a stogie. If your gonna spend that much money on a piece of clothing then you should make a commitment to wearing it more than once or twice a year. I currently throw on a kilt 75 to 100 days a year.

The reaction from the crowd is always the same, the ladies want to know what you have on under it and the answer varies from crowd to crowd but my favorite responses are "A VERY large pair of shoes" or "Give me your hand and lets find out". Most of the guys, especialy when I wear the Utilikilt, want to know where to get one and I think that they are starting to become more widely accepted in society.

As for experiences wearing them, I will wear mine this summer while playing with my pipe band and while competing in some highland athletic competitions and will be wearing some of my non tartan kilts to Banaroo.

Durring a gig, it's hard to tell but I am wearing one in this picture.

Here I am after a gig with my rock band (I'm on the right) and just after signing a girls stomach. Had to snap the photo because it was my first body signing.

Bundled up prior to the St. Patrick's day Parade. Damn it was cold!!! That's why I have no neck in this photo.

St. Patrick's Day 2008 with my buddy and great Piper Durant. We have been playing together on and off for over 17 years now.

As for interesting stories while wearing a kilt I will share 2 with you.

1. While filling in with a friends band a few years ago at Toad's PLace in New Haven I wore a tartan kilt while playing. After we were done playing I was standing in the back of the club talking to some friends of mine when a very drunk woman comes over and askes the age old question; "What are you wearing under your kilt?" My Response was the typical, in a bar with no kids around response, "A large pair of boots!" As I turned back to my friends she drops to her knees and shoves her entire head up under the backside of my kilt. Both of my friends were damn near speachless and the two cops standing by the door both just looked at me with the deer caught in the headlights look.

2. And I promiss that this will be the far more interesting of the two incidents. It was St. Patrick's day about 5 years ago, I was in the Playwright Pub in New Haven CT, which is a very large pub. The place has 5 bars and will hold about 2000 people in it and on St. Patrick's they are pushing capacity with lines down the block to get in. Being with the mini pipe band I was playing in has it's advantages to line skipping on some days. People were standing pretty much shoulder to shoulder with no room to move. I was leaning up against the bar waiting for the bartender to bringe me my drink and I felt hair on the inside of my thigh. I look down and there is a 3 foot tall woman exiting from my kilt. The crowd around me laughed but I wasn't sure if it was from the sight or my total stunned reaction that left me speachless and her smiling.

Now, if you buy a kilt and wear it out and someone gives you crap about it you feel free to send them my way and I will set them straight for you.

Oh, Carono Gigante, if you need help finding a good, reputable kilt maker or have any questions about anything you are looking into buying feel free to send me a PM and I will be happy to help you out with any information I have.

I ask that no one use these photos for any photochop contests, there are plenty of good photos of me already floating around the board.

O c'mon, I know you see there is a difference. The only reason people where kilts is because of it's national heritage..

all the other things have function that benefits you in some way that is different from what nationality the item represents.

also please note, i don't go to people wearing kilts and say "you shouldn't be wearing that". I just think wow, this guy is looking for attention in my head. (maybe so I don't get a beat down? )

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

People don't wear levi's to look like gold miners, they don't get tatoos to make themselves look polynesian, they don't wear baseball hats to make them look like major leaguers. and people don't eat ethnic food for the sake of looking like you are a different ethnicity.

I'll give you the shoe thing on some level, those people who wear those big bball shoes when they never play bball is kinda stupid, but otherwise some people can't afford to buy running shoes, walking shoes, whatever, so they buy cross trainers, which covers all areas...

when it comes to kilts- i don't see a reason for it other than free flow of air (which is a lil disturbing to think about) and to look like you are scottish/irish/celtic

I know you think my view sounds stupid, but i have my reasons.

I would think that the comfort factor might be one of the reasons, and saying the only reason is a little silly.
Tats? Function??? No. Artistic? I'll give you that.
I do, however, think that if you wear a kilt, you should be able to receive and/or give a punch, or have the ability to remove yourself from a situation where some moron is giving you shit, and thinks he or she would be amused to get aggressive with you. The other option (edit) is that you should be able to very politely that if they think you look "silly" or "unScots-like" or whatever, that they are encouraged to keep their opinions to themselves.
I think some folks don't have any of those options in their quiver, so to speak.

It would seem to me that you realy didn't give your response a lot of thought before post it did you? While I am proud of my heritage, most of the time I spend in a kilt is spent in a non tradition non tartan kilt. I wear them for comfort and for functionability and could care less what people think about it. If people choose to pay more attention to me because of what I'm wearing then so be it. As for making comments that suggest that someone shouldn't be wearing one you should keep in mind that most men that I know who wear them in public, especialy the ones who wear them just because they want to and not because they need to for something (A pipe band for instance), are usualy very secure in who they are and will be very quick to set you stright on the wearing of the kilt.

The very first post here was someone asking for assistance in purchasing a kilt, if you don't have anything positive to ad to the conversation then maybe you should hold your tongue.

If however you would like a proper education on kilts, why they are worn, who wears them and what it all means then by all means, let me know and I will be happy to educate you on the subject and let you know that we are not simply attention seekers.
