point taken, although I have never seen someone not of celtic decent wear a kilt, even if not in traditional patterns or fabrics.

It's one of those things that I just can't see as practical, no matter how hard I try.

Good for a guy who is considering buying a kilt to hear both sides of thought on them, don't ya think?

Didn't mean to start an argument, just got a comment back that seemed to misunderstand my reasoning, and had to clarify what my reasoning was.

doesn't sound like some of you are as confident as you say by the way some of ya are getting defensive. (haha- a joke)

Thanks for all the responses, especially to Stig and Hugh (hotreds) for sharing some valuable info and experiences. I guess you just don't whether you're prepared to look down and see a 3 foot tall woman exiting from under your kilt until it actually happens!!

I've been looking at the KiltStore.com website. The prices seem reasonable and there's a very informative ebook which answered a lot of my questions while I wait for my copy of "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt?" to arrive from the library.

Maybe next time you should word it a little better, for instance "Why would you want to wear a Kilt? Especialy if you are not of Celtic Decent?" Instead of

I am of strong Irish Decent, however If I went to Ireland and said that I was Irish, theyd laugh in my face. I maybe of Irish decent, but that doesn't make me Irish!

I say let the scottish keep their traditions, and the american's keep theirs.

Nicholas I was at Half Price Books yesterday and I looked to see if they had this book but they didn't. In fact they didn't have any books related to Kilts or Cigars. At least not that I could find.

I Have a quick question. what is the history behind the Kilt. Was there a certain reason for it. or Was it a type of Military dressing for the Scots back in the day, I'm just asking for my on curiosity. Thanks, And Being proud of your heritage is a great thing,, to me not enough people seem to care about thier heritage or if it goes away.

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

Actually, the "Great Kilt" was made from nine yards of material- that is where we get the expression: "The whole nine yards." I have a book that lists the tartan for close to 1000 last names if anyone is interested in what tartan they could wear. In fact, nowadays, if you have the coin, you can have an official tartan certified for yourself. A friend of mine actually had this done. He sent the tartan he designed to some "keeper of the tartan" in Scotland along with a considerable sum of mulah, and after a month or so was granted a new plaid(tartan) for the name "Leach."

Many states and cities also have tartans. Ohio has a very pretty tartan, and the USA bicentennial tartan is very attractive, too.

Here's an official picture with the Queen and a regiment of kilt wearing soldiers. Answers a couple of questions. Namely: What is worn under the kilt? and How far would you go on a bet?

NSFW but you know you want to look.

This is also a great site for researching tartans by fanily name, county or clan.

This is SUCH A GREAT BOOK! I literally could not put it down until I finished it. I had no idea there was no much detail. Most of it would be moot for my purposes, but nevertheless it's important to be aware of some of the issues in order to approach the subject with the appropriate dignity and respect.

I borrowed my copy from the Houston public library. I noticed it had been donated by the president of the Houston Highland Games. Further investigation is in order.
