Anyone wear a kilt?

For some weird reason, I have lately been thinking about buying a kilt. My family is originally from Scotland, so I'm entitled. My family tartan is not necessarily one of the most attractive, but it's not too bad.

I'm thinking about a 5 yard "casual" in 12oz pure new wool. With the sporran and sporran chain (and optional sporran flask), I'd be looking at about $300.

And then my wife popped up and asked, "Where would you wear it?"

Well, weddings and formal events, I suppose, any Irish or Scottish-themed events; but that would only be two or three times a year.

So I was wondering: are there any kilt wearers out the in the jungle? Would you care to share some of your kilt wearing experiences? What kind of kilt do you own? Which accessories? Where have you worn your kilt? What kind of reactions have you received? Have you any thoughts or advice for the neophyte kilt wearer?

I'm not sure I would recommend it for you, Nicholas.

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

How arrre ya lad? President of Clan Montgomery Society here! Wear a kilt fairly often, but I attend a number of Scottish Games/festivals. Yes, you need a sporran and a nice buckle would be worthwhile as well.

I know there are Games in Houston! Go there and see how some of the tent hosts are dressed. There is also a book called "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt?" that will give you plenty of info.

http://www.amazon.com/So-Youre-Going...8210595&sr=8-1

You can go as fancy as you'd like- but you also need to get some "hose" (socks) and "flashes" for the hose. Also a kilt pin for the kilt. A kilt is great for formal wear and is very becoming! Those that make snide comments do so out of jealousy or lack of knowledge!

Congrats to ya! Let me know what you decide, and let me know if I can help you in any way!

Yours aye!

Hugh

Coitenly, but, oh, boy, the wool would inhale the smoke something fierce! It would have to go straight to the dry cleaners! And, depending on the weather, they can be most unpleasant! I'd be the last person to suggest going regimental to stay cooler!

Peter ... that's just a skirt. Matt calls it a "kilt" to avoid embarrassment.

Well, as a person with alphabet soup after your name, you don't know much about Matt. (yes I saw the winking smiley)

Matt not only is extremely proud of his heritage, he plays drums in a pipe band, has been to Scotland, and participated in a caber toss among many other things. Ya wanna bag on someone who wears a kilt, have a go at PaulMac.

Thumbs up Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

Nope, not me. But if it was my heritage, I doubt I'd hesitate.

Thanks for the tip on the book. I shall seek it out.

I assume "going regimental" is what we might call "going commando," i.e., sans undergarment?

I wouldn't want to do that ... PaulMac is just crazy/drunk enough to flip the kilt up in retribution. God knows *no one* deserves that -- but the Scottish Assassin knows no boundaries.

Re: Anyone wear a kilt?

Do you have any opportunity to go to a Robbie Burns Supper or Dance or event in late Janaury? That's when I would wear a kilt.

And if anyone asks "What is worn under a kilt?" The correct answer is: "Nothing is worn, it's all in perfect working order."
