Favorite work of art?

I have a few.... one of my very favorite is famous, but not up there with the "great" works of art that would first come to mind.

It is "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges-Pierre Seurat

and yes, it was in Ferris Bueller haha (not why I like it though)
how about everyone else?

"The Inscription Over the Gate" by William Blake. It depicts the 3rd Canto of Dante's Divine Comedy where Dante and Virgil are standing at the gates of hell.

Starry Night by van Gogh, this is my favorite - I have this over my fireplace - not the original of course - that's stored in my attic

Re: Favorite work of art?

This is one of my favorites, La persistencia de la memoria. Really almost anything by Salvador Dali would qualify for me. This one is almost too commercial for me.

Some of his other surrealistic works captivate me even more. Like this one, The Lugubrious Game/Le Jeu lugubre. Dude, he did this in 1929:

Luis Royo: Medusa's Gaze.

I'm a big fan of Luis Royo having a dozen or so of his books - this is one of my top favorites of his.

Re: Favorite work of art?

I don't know what makes you think "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" isn't one of the great pieces of western art because by all accounts it is. Seurat is one of the great impressionist painters.

Here are two of my favorite sculptures

Both are by August Rodin the first is the Helmet Makers Wife the second the Danaid. I like both of these pieces for both the same and very different reasons that are too lengthy to explain here. The man had an amazing eye for the human figure. I could probably make 50 posts of favorite pieces of art from different periods and media. Great thread.

I Cannot say I have a favorite, but I have always been a fan of Norman Rockwell:

My wife and I had a chance to meet Wylan, he was pretty cool and even signed a print my wife had of his. Here is a pic of him painting a manatee:

By all means I do think it is one of the greatest pieces of art, just saying it isn't like certain extremely popular ones by Van Gogh or Da Vinci that come to peoples mind first in many cases

I hear what you are saying King James. I guess I have a pretty broad series of art that come to mind.

In response to Jbailey
The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Hokusai Katsushika was one I would have posted if I was going to post from Edo period prints. There is some amazing work from this period.

Visions of Eternity by Dali

Some other favorites:
