Going under the knife for a septoplasty (deviated septum). Anybody have this done?

Well, sound out that I'm going under the knife for a septoplasty to repair my deviated septum 3 weeks from now. Kind of freaked out over it, but at least I'll be able to breath for once like a normal human being. Will be pretty screwed up for about a week. After a week and half I think I can smoke cigars again and can't wait. Has anyone had this done?

Believe it or not I had that and adnoise out at age 7.

Sorry dont remember how it felt. However, I can breathe fine and have no allergies.

How bad could it have been. I am 38 and still breathing nicely through my noggin.

Good luck, You will be fine.

As surgeries go, this is relatively minor. I know, easy for me to say. I'm not having it done. Remember, you will have the emotional and moral support of your twin brother the entire time.
Hang in there, bro.

My best friend had it done a couple years ago. Looked like he went a couple rounds with Tyson, but there was nothing to it. After a couple days the swelling and bruising went away and he was better than new.

Good luck, wishing you a speedy recovery. Sounds like a minor operation, but nothing is minor when it happens to you. Hope everything goes smoothly and I am sure you will be able to smoke before you know it.

Ask your surgeon and your GP. Good luck with the surgery.

Re: Going under the knife for a septoplasty (deviated septum). Anybody have this done?

I had a deviated septum for a long time, and then being on the losing end of brawl, it was time to get it fixed at age 20. It was a little painful and fearful, since they really cut away inside your nose & throat, and you're under general anesthetic, which posses its own risks. The most memorable part is when they put the gauze out after your nose has been bleeding for a week the scabs form around the hair in your nose. The rush as they pull the gauze out, I will never forget.

I've had a few painful things in my life including cutting off a finger (sewn back on and ok), crushing a toe, and cortisone shots into the lower spine and the gauze is up there.

It takes a long time for your nose to really settle in, and if you do a lot of cardio, you could be sidelined for a short time. It's worth it in the end, so no worries. Glad I don’t have to go through that again, and good luck.

Re: Going under the knife for a septoplasty (deviated septum). Anybody have this done?

I had the pleasure of having it done not once, but twice, within 12 months.
The first surgery was to remove a massive nasal tumor.
They actually had to cut my nose from the bridge at the top, all the way down to one of the nostrils. They then pulled it over, removed the cartlidge, removed the tumor and put me back together again.

The doctor tried to fix the septum while at it but it deviated pretty badly after that so I had to go back for another surgery to correct the septum.

All this was 25 yrs ago and be grateful medicine has advanced tremendously since then. What to me was living hell, as my face looked like Mike Tyson had a field day with me (lips shut for a week, eyes literally shut for about the same time) can now be done in an office, as an outpatient, with minimal swelling and bruising.

The sad thing is after all that, my septum is still crooked. As long as I can breathe with my mouth closed, I won't do it a third time.
Good luck and again, be very happy you are having this done in 2005 and not in the dark ages.

Re: Going under the knife for a septoplasty (deviated septum). Anybody have this done?

I had it done too....you wont feel a thing...until you wake up.....the WORST part for me was the rubber-like packing they put in both nostrils after the operation...try sleeping with that shi_ or eating!! It also sucked when they removed the packing and cleaned the inside nostrils of scabs, etc.
But there is not much downtime which is good probably a week or less and you will be back and smoking!
