A Little Knife Help Please.

Been wanting to get a new pocket knife for work but want something that will hold an edge. I have a Leatherman Wave, it's a cool tool, just not cutting it... hahaha... well I laughed. Anyway, did a search here and read Nely has a Cold Steel Recon with spear point, so I looked those up here... $250AU, ouch. So anyone got any ideas on a good, not so expensive, knife?? I have seen Columbia River here for about half the price of the CS but don't know much about them.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks
Jason

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

I don't know what you are planning to use the knife for, but I've always loved my Benchmade knives... they have some pretty expensive stuff, but also some relatively inexpensive entry models(sub-$50 US). I LOVE their Axis folder knives.

http://www.benchmade.com/

Also Spyderco makes some good inexpensive knives, and has a couple entry models.

http://spyderco.com/

Otherwise, you can buy that bulk stuff from China.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

I have been a big fan of Uncle Henry knives, and to my horror as I was looking for a link I got this
Quote:
UNCLE HENRY KNIVES

Imperial Schrade closed their doors July 30, 2004, after 100 years of business. We will not be able to restock our Schrade inventory as it sells out. There will be no more original Schrade knives produced, making the few Schrade knives we have left extremely collectable. If we can, we will buy these items on the secondary market when possible. Get a piece of Schrade history while you can.

Uncle Henry Knives, made by Schrade, are hand crafted to custom standards. Each Uncle Henry signature pocket knife has Schrade+ stainless steel blades (prized for their excellent edge holding ability and rust resistance), solid brass liners, nickel silver bolsters, and almost indestructible Staglon handles with nickel silver Uncle Henry signature shield. Rounding out the Uncle Henry line are the Bear Paw folding hunter, the distinctive Golden Spike fixed blade hunter, and the Steelhead fillet. The Uncle Henry knife line is proudly made in the U.S.A. and carries the exclusive Uncle Henry One Year Loss Guarantee.

For almost 100 years, since 1904, Schrade products have been manufactured in Ellenville, NY with superior materials and expert craftsmanship. Made Schrade Tough in the U.S.A., Schrade's Uncle Henry and Old Timer knife products have been carried by generations of Americans, and prized for their reliability, durability and value.

Deeply rooted in the American tradition, the Schrade Knife family tree includes: Old Timer Knives, Uncle Henry Knives, Schrade Tough Tools, high tech X-Timer knives, Q3 knives, etc. that are proudly made in the U.S.A.-as well as Tradesman, Apex, and Imperial products that are manufactured in their facility in Listowel, Ireland.
So if you can find any left, i highly recommend getting an uncle henry

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

Ditto either Spyderco or Benchmade. Depending on the type of knife you're after, you might also look at William Henry. I don't know what your budget is, but with better knives, especially custom stuff, the sky is the limit.

Try looking over at www.bladeforums.com for more information. Just read the FAQs and do a search first, and you'll have more information than you can shake a stick at.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

Kershaw makes a great folder that will hold an edge. Not very expensive at all. I have one called the wirlwind or something like that was 50$ and is pretty sweet. It has a 3 1/2 blade and is assisted opening. Great buy.

Columbia river knives are a nice product. I have used a few and are really nice for the money. I would buy one without hesitation.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

As Hammerhead said, bladeforums is an excellent resource. I'm Croatan over there, too but I haven't posted in quite a while.

I used to buy Spydercos and Benchmades exclusively--both great knives. The problem is that I lose knives. I've probably lost well over a dozen in the last ten years. Anyway, I got tired of dropping $100-$200 every few months so, after a bit of research, I bought a Columbia River Carson Design (M16-00K) for my everyday carry knife.

This one to be exact:

And I couldn't be happier. I bought mine on ebay for around $30. For the price, I've never seen a better knife. The "Carson Flipper" is extremely useful (and quick) and the blade is pretty darn good, too.

CRKT makes some nice knives. I have had an M-16 for a long while and it is a darn good knife. They may be a bid longer than you like though CRKT offers smaller knives as and their quality is pretty high.

What are you actually needing this for? Check this out.(image is a link)

Those Cuda's in the pic a few posts above are nice, too.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

Wow a knife question!!!! I used to sell knives when I was in school (many many many moons ago)............

I've always been partial to Schrade Old Timers; however, they aren't stainless and are subject to rust if neglected. They require a little oil and TLC. The Uncle Henrys are identical in construction and are stainless. Case also make a wide variety of pocket knives in both carbon and stainless. I really like the bone handle Cases.........

Kershaw, Gerber, Buck and the like are all (for the most part) stainless and very similar from a "hold the edge" standpoint. Out of the three, I'd have to go with the Kershaw.

Talking about knives is definitely more fun than accounting!!!

OK........NOW BACK TO WORK!!!

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

I own the Kershaw Chive. Great little knife that pops open with a spring and it's stayed extremely sharp the past 2 years. When I had a problem with a screw, they immediately sent me a new one without questions. It's a perfect size and I carry it everywhere with me. Has a latch to prevent accidental opening as well since this thing opens fast! There are other knives in the line that have a serrated edge if that's what you're looking for. I can't recommend this knife enough. Only cost me about $25-$30 USD at a local store.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

Case has a few knives that have a high carbon chrome vanadium steel. Easier to sharpen and hold the edge longer. The only downside is that the blade easily tarnishes and rusts so a little extra care is needed for the blade.

here's a good one. 4 1/4" closed.

Medium

Large

No picture, but a large fixed blade Case hunting knife.

I like all of them, and Case has a great warranty.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

most of the big guys (Schrade, Buck, Gerber, Case, Kershaw) have great warrantee programs..........

I'm not wild about Buck.........however, I returned a 110 Folding Hunter a few years ago........It was obvious I used it as a machete or screwdriver..............they sent me a new one with no questions.

you can't go wrong with any of the above suggestions.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

My case was sent back after using it for the old "see who can throw the knife into the doorframe" contest. Lasted probably a couple hundred throws until the spring steel locking mechanism broke.

Re: A Little Knife Help Please.

I've owned several CRKT knives and liked every one. Definitely consider how you will be using the knife and try to match the steel/temper to the use. If it is going to be strictly a cutting blade, go with a harder steel around 60 Rockwell C. If it is going to be an all purpose cutting, prying, hacking, stabbing, jack of all trades knife (the way I use mine) then something a little softer like 56-57 Rockwell C will work better. Lots of CRKT blades are AUS A8 steel around 58c, which is a pretty good all around choice.

I also have knives with D2 tool steel blades that I really like. They are a little more expensive than the CRKT's, but worth it IMHO.

Let us know what you pick out.
