Maui Experts? Location Kapalua vs. Kannapali
Anyone here know or been to Maui a bunch of times? I'm looking at resorts at Kapalua vs. Kannapali, thought the resorts at Kapalua are much nicer, I've seen reviews where it is very windy there. Kannapali has more activity and is better weather.
Thanks for any input |

Re: Maui Experts? Location Kapalua vs. Kannapali
all those resorts in there are on the west coast, leeward, less wind than the eastern coastlines. I've been on Maui maybe 5 times and never encountered any wind that I would have considered problematic but spent most of my time in the trees or under the water.
I think it was Paia where all the windsurfers flock to, if the layout has anything to do with it then Kapalua could indeed be the windier as it's situated similarly on the coastline to Paia. Must be gonna golf a lot? Have fun!

Re: Maui Experts? Location Kapalua vs. Kannapali
Kapalua and Kaanapali are within minutes of each other on the West Coast.
Kahalui(where the airport is) is on the East Coast. Trade winds will blow every afternoon, but are not so much as to distract from your enjoyment of paradise. Pick the resort you want and get a rental car, the island is small and has lots of spots to explore if that is your desire. ![]()

Re: Maui Experts? Location Kapalua vs. Kannapali
Every side of the island is different. Up by Lahina and Napili Kai it is wetter and more green. Wailea is all golf courses and dry. Kihei is a beach town--lots of fun to stroll around and good places to eat. Never stayed up by the airport-it is just a big city. You sill need to go all over the island anyway. Drive the road to Hana and go up the volcano to see the sunrise. Good snorkling at both ends of the island. Absolutely the greatest and funniest magic show in Lahina-it is a don't miss!

If you're not looking for anything special but some daily smoke smokes, Kick Ass Coffee on Front Street has a small humidor with some decent stuff in it and there is a tobacconist with a decent selection and pricing in the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Both are minutes down the road from either resort in Lahaina. Wouldn't buy anywhere inside the resort compounds.

Careful they don't go crazy on you. Last time I was in Maui one of the bus rides I rode on, the driver warned us that the "local girls will turn you into Kobe Bryant" (back when Kobe got caught up in the rape scandal in Colorado).
![]() Don't know if there is any truth in that rumor, but better safe than sorry.

Re: Maui Experts? Location Kapalua vs. Kannapali
We stayed in Kaanapali both times we visited Maui, and loved it (stayed in a different hotel each visit). Kapalua is great, but the hotels we looked at were much more expensive, and we prefer to spend more money on activity than on a hotel that we don't spend much time in. They are just a short distance from each other also. The wind blows almost everywhere, but it's no biggie. If you really want to blow money on a place to stay, stay in the area south of Lahaina (Princeville????). Very expensive resorts, last we were there.
Lots of night life in Lahaina, and if you want to do a luau, Lahaina's is really good. It's also a good place to get a charter for whale-watching or going to Molokini crater for snorkeling. But there is great snorkeling all over the island. As CigarGal noted, don't miss a trip up Haleakala. Also plan on a day to drive to Hana. If you have enough time, go to Hana from the west side of the island. You go up towards Haleakala, but head off west somewhere around a little winery. The road eventually turns to gravel/dirt and one lane, but was very passable when we were there in '02. The drive is fantastic, and there was not any traffic on it when we drove it in '00 and '02. There are many places to stop and look around and hike to waterfalls and beaches. Good view of the Big Island when you hit the south end, on a clear day. You eventually hit road again around the 7 Pools area, and then hit Hana. Wherever you drive in these places, remember to pull over frequently and let faster traffic around you. You'll also need some patience on the highway to Hana, as traffic can be bad. Have a great trip!!! |

Re: Maui Experts? Location Kapalua vs. Kannapali
I'm no Maui expert, but seeing how I was born in Wailuku I would suggest Kaanapali.
