We had a storm? (with pics)

So I woke up this morning and it didn't seem like anything special was going on (aside from Mother's Day). I got up, got ready for the gym, and left. The gym's only a couple/few of miles from my house, so it's a pretty quick drive. Not quite half way there, I go to turn a corner and there's a *huge* tree fallen over. It's not just broken (though it is that, too -- look at the vertical split in the third and fourth photos), but totally uprooted. Must have been some damn strong winds because it looks like a real healthy tree. Back at my place, there wasn't a stray branch or leaf to be found; but just a mile or less away is this scene:

I had to go back this afternoon and get pictures. Luckily, it fell away from a beautiful brick building on campus and it doesn't look like anything aside from the foliage was damaged.

The power of nature....

I'm no expert, but that tree looks diseased. The rootwad looks pretty small for a tree that size, plus the roots have an odd look to them. If thats the case, it might not have taken much of a wind to knock it down.

Maybe ... or it might just be that the roots snapped. Check out this crop:

If the roots were weak from disease they would snap easily. But then I don't know your area. The ground around here (Oregon coast) is fairly soft so when a tree goes down it has a pretty large rootwad. If your area has hard packed soil, then yeah, I guess it could have snapped healthy roots. Was there any other wind related damage in the area?

Re: We had a storm? (with pics)

Apparently there was other wind damage. I didn't drive around town, but I'm told there was a tornado south of us. I guess I big storm system moved through; but I guess it just barely missed me. Go figure.

The ground is generally pretty compacted -- Georgia red clay -- and that tree's not in a particularly moist area (no streams, dips to collect water, etc.). It could very well have been diseased ... I just thought it looked pretty healthy aside from, well, now being dead.

BTW, branches and stuff are missing and in a pile next to the tree. I guess they came out early and chopped it up a bit. By the looks of it, the tree fell into the roadway.

Re: We had a storm? (with pics)

Those roots were rotted. If you had a more zoomed out pic I could narrow down why. It uprooted because of this. Most likely construction damage from some no nothing Ahole!

The vertical splits shouldnt have happened if the tree was healthy. healthy trees bounce, and dont break.

Shame!

Tornadoes around central and south GA early this morning. Serious damage down near my parents' house.

Hope everyone's ok up your way, TP.

I drove through parts of Clayton County yesterday on the way to my in-laws and the damage was pretty extensive down there. Up here we just had a few limbs down.

Re: We had a storm? (with pics)

Hey Professor, I hope no one was injured during that storm. We had a pretty bad storm a couple of years ago that took out a bunch of trees in my neighborhood. I think we were the only house in the neighborhood that didn't lose a single tree.

This is a pic the next morning of my neighborhood

This is my neighbor's house

The same neighbor's house (poor guy)

A pic of that same tree with my brother as a reference to scale

That was a pretty crazy storm. Straight line winds that knocked down a ton of trees and created a hell of a lot of damage.
