Vendors here are usually selling expensive analytical equipment. We rarely have the $ so it is easy to stop them with a quick "we dont have funding". We have one bozo who likes to drop by and "chat" so whenever I see him I get in lab and start looking as busy as I can.

Good advice. I've often used "i'm over budget at the moment" and that gets them off quick.

I have had some very direct conversation with vendors that just drop by. I tell them the first time that if they are to EVER have any hope of doing business with me, they will call and make an appointment. Then I inform them that if they ever drop by without an appointment again, I will have them banned from the buiolding/campus whatever. This usually gets there attention and I have no problem being stern with anyone that rude.
