Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

Has anyone here been through Plantar Fasciitis Surgery? I've been dealing with Plantar Fasciitis for about two years and cant take it (or afford it) any more. I'm in constant pain and have lost about 8 months of work total because of it. Anyway, I'm scheduled for surgery on 7-9-08 and was wondering what others had expensed with it. Sorry about the rant but I'm just curious. Thanks.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

Thanks for the link. But sorry about the surgery.
I have been experiencing heel pain, right foot only thank goodness, because of this for about 3 months now. I changed from my slip-on work boots with little arch support to some lace up work boots that have a insole with taller arch support..That has helped a bunch.

What is involved in the surgery to correct the problem? Is the surgery to remove spurs or repair the plantar fascia ligament? Did you try the shots??

Man those first dozen steps in the morning..OUCH..I don't know if I could handle it if I had that much pain in both feet...

Re: Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

I was diagnosed with that a few years ago but in the end it was a result of pinched nerves in my low back and in my atlas vertebra. At the time the best thing I could use was a little harness that strapped around my ankle with a strap attached to it that ran under my instep. Made it almost completely go away until I got some of the other problems figured out. Is there a NUCCA (upper cervical chiropractor) in your area? Its amazing what a little push on that one vertebra can cure. PM me if you want to know anything about that. Best wishes for a quick and healthy recovery BTW

I don't have any heal spurs, and all the shots and exercises did nothing for it. There going to open up the foot and cut into the plantar fascia ligament to relieve the pressure. Imagen stretching a wide rubber band, then cutting into it.

I had 2 non-union fractures (one after the other) on my other foot just before the plantar fasciitis kicked in. My doctor thinks that limping around with the fractures may have caused it.

My advice to you would be go see a doctor. They can help a lot. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long the first time.

Plantar Fasciitis Surgery
Not sure if you have seen a good podiatrist and I mean a good podiatrist. If not I highly recommend you do so.
I experienced Plantar Fasciitis about 4 years ago and my doctor refered me to a podiatrist. We talked about the various treatments including surgery to which he said that should be the last resort. It is painful and you are laid up for a while.
He made casts of the bottoms of both feet and made custom inserts for my shoes, wrote me a script for Motrin, I wore a night splint on the injured foot, did the tendon stretching excerises, and after about two months all was well.
Once in a great while when I am on my feet 10-12 hours a day, 3 or 4 days straight without the inserts (call me stupid) on hard surfaces it might flair up but I do get some warning and when that happens I get back into the tendon stretching excerises and wear the night splint for a couple of nights and all is good. What I really need to do is loose about 40 pounds and that probably would go a long way to preventing it from happening again.
Maybe I am lucky that mine is not as chronic as your pain is and yes it hurts like hell I know.

The web link in your post has good information. I speak from experience.
PM me if you would like to know more.

I've been seeing a podiatrist for about 3yrs now. I think I've been through all the treatments and therapy at least 3 or 4 times by now. lol I hate the night splint. But, I've been wearing it every night (well...just about every night) for 7 -8 months. On the other hand, I think everybody should have a pair or two of custom orthopedics, bad feet or not. Man, what a difference they make. I too could stand to lose 40 or 50lb.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

I had it bother me for about a year and a half. What helped me was better shoes and orthotics. I just used the over the counter Phase4 ones. After a few months, it got better.

For me Sacony running shoes seem to work great. I got a pair of New Balance, and I noticed the heel started bothering me again. So it is just a matter of finding something that helps. But I may not have had it as bad as you did.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

Ouch - I feel for you. Mine were taken care of with stretching, custom inserts and cortisone shots.

My inserts were made by walking over a mat which measured my feet, pressure points, arch etc. $360 bucks worth. My right foot had one shot and my left foot which was worse required two shots - the second one six months after the first.

I've been pain free for a little over 4 years now. I don't wear the inserts anymore but I only wear Nike's or Merrells for their arch and shank support. My work boots are Filson's with hunting soles and cork inserts. So far it all works for me.

Best of luck to you in this - I know it's painful - and the recovery won't be easy either.
