13 Ounces of Pain

This little beast is one of my primary carry pieces now S&W 340CT M&P .357 Magnum. In case anyone was wondering what it's like to shoot, here's a brief description: With .38 Specials there's little to no recoil. .38 Special +P's are about the same, barely feel them. Full power .357 Magnums just plain hurt. They hurt a LOT.... I should note that I shoot it one handed, double taps from a low ready. While this no doubt leads to more recoil pain, well, it's how I'll likely use it if needed, so it's how I train. I can't recommend this little guy enough for easy, discrete carry (pocket carry has quickly become my favorite), but be warned, it's not fun to shoot!

With the laser on:

Night Sight glowing away (20 second exposure to get this!):

Speed Loader full of Corbon DPX .357 Magnums (lighter recoil, not full load):

No good can come from .357 with 13 oz to cut down the recoil.. I actually don't mind recoil. I would shoot it with you.... But only 5, and only once.

Not the first time I've heard that! Actually, most don't even want to try. Honestly, it's not like it causes permanent damage or anything, and if I ever needed it out in the real world I'm sure I wouldn't even notice the muzzle blast or recoil. I'm able to do some pretty quick double taps with the magnums, but I do pay for it later...

Re: 13 Ounces of Pain

I've been a big Smith & Wesson fan since I was in my teens. Two of my Uncles were cops and their S&W snubbies were the first handguns I ever shot. I think I was eight or nine.

In the early 70's I joined the force and was issued a 4" M-19. Carried a 2" M-60 as an off duty piece for years. Later on the MT Hwy Patrol carried a M-28 then a 5903, until we went to SIG's. Still carried my M-60 as a BUG.

After the take over by Lear Sigler when the Company was bought by the Saf-T-Hammer folks IMHO S&W has been missing the mark. These flyweight carry guns are useful in .38 Special when carried a lot, but shot very little. The lightweight .357's, .44 mags, .45 acp's as well as the .500 cannons pound the shooter with far too much recoil.

Don't even start me on the useless LOCK that was shoved down our throats when they caved in to the Clintons and the anti gun crowd. I'd hazard a guess that the majority of buyer don't care for it. Until they drop it (never happen) there isn't a new Smith wheelgun that interests me.

I know times change. But I'm unhappy with the direction the S&W products have taken these past dozen years.

I'll continue to collect the older classic revolvers from their golden years.

Yea, I'm right there with you on that, it disgusts me. I've wondered if I could have a gunsmith weld those locks up and make the disappear, but then I'd probably be in violation of some obscure "save the baby seals" law or something. Grumble, grumble....

I'd LOVE one of those Model 28's, NICE!!! I love their new "Classic" line, but again all of these also have that nasty lock on the sides. As you said, collecting the old, original ones is the way to go.

Re: 13 Ounces of Pain

CobraJet,

One can buy true Classic old Smiths for less money than the lock equipped current models. But decent deals on older revolvers, with box, accessories are going away....and quickly.

Recently bought an older 2 1/2" M-19, blued, 98% or better, with original box and tools..... $450

Heres a shot of some of the N frame shooters after a day at the range. A few of us do a fun shoot where we shoot at a std sheet of 8.5x11 inch colored paper hung at 100 yds. Keeping five shots on paper at 100 yds IS a challenge.

From the left; 6" M-657 .41 mag, 6" M-29-3 44 mag, pre model number 27 8 3/8", Freedom Arms M83 .454 five shooter, M-629 Performance Center Lt Wt Hunter .44 mag, M-625 .45 Colt 5".

Re: 13 Ounces of Pain

"Thats a nice collection there FN'.

I think I have either 55 or 56 handguns, most of them Smith revolvers. With the occasional Browning Hi-Power, Freedom Arms, Colt, SIG, HK and USFA thrown in. Not a single Ruger or Glock though.
