Check local golf stores. They usually have trade-ins at a good price. They'll probably let you use them for a week or so to decide. It's worth a try.

I got me a set of forged cavity backs that impressed the heck out of a couple guys I was paired up with many years back. Target $99. Works for me.

Re: Golf Starter set...

Personally, I would avoid a "starter set" that includes a bag, woods, irons, etc. Most of them are junk. The technology today is so good that you could find a bargain on a great super game-improvement set of irons for < $250.

Golf is one of those sports that the newest thing is always the most expensive. Last years technology is probably just as good as this years. Check out some of the Adams hybrid sets. They will give you some great offerings and the set will give you a couple irons and transition into hybrids.

I went to several places like both Mart's and for the French here.. Target' and oddly enough Big Lot's and scored single clubs cheap but I only go to the driving range..

I would also try a site like GigaGolf.com. They custom build "look-alikes" for a good price and they feel nice. I'm a decent golfer (low to mid 90s) and I have a bag full of GigaGolf clubs. The shafts and grips are top-notch and will last.

Re: Golf Starter set...

i echo the lesson and fitting suggestions others have made, a lesson will go a long way to help your understanding and pleasure of the game as you begin. It will get you acquainted with the etiquette of golf and the rules.. gawd, the rules

going with custom fitting will also put you ahead of the curve, if you listen to club makers and people like ralph maltby who have been designing clubs for decades they all know that a custom fit set is the only way to really get good at golf..

craigslist!!
like someone else already mentioned, after you go get a lesson or at least talk to a pro about getting in to golf - check craigslist for used sets of clubs. IMO a used set of top brand clubs will get you going a lot better than a clone set off of pinemeadow/gigagolf or any of the other online retailers that sell clone sets.

If you talk with a club maker you might learn about another category of clubs, component clubs but for brevity Ill just say they are not clones since they have proprietary design but they are not any of the top brands that you would be familiar with either (nike, titlest, etc). If you are fortunate enough to know a good clubmaker these (component clubs) are really the way to go as you can customize any club you want to get it just right.. but i digress.. that might be a little too much info for a beginner - just get out there and have some fun!!

HAHA, Tenbaseg I think this is true for a lot of sports equipment. New softball bats every year seem to fetch about $200-$350 for one bat. Lucky for me I don't buy new stuff or many bats due to currently having only two arms...

Great advice guys....I hope work is slow enough today where I can look around on the cyber web thingy for local golf lessons and fitting.

Re: Golf Starter set...

There are a number of places where you can save money on brand name clubs, but they make several lines. Some are for the high handicap golfers, more forgiving on off center hits and others for low handicappers which usually offer more control, but aren't as forgiving on bad shots. So do some research about the equipment before buying.

Last season I picked up a driver that is like the Nike Sumo Squared to test out and eventually get the real thing- the driver plays so well I have no reason to get the Nike. My dad picked up a set of irons from them and LOVES them.
