The day Verizon offers em I'll get it, TMO and AT&T reception is minimal here.

Unless you buy an unlocked iPhone it will be at least until 2010 when the AT&T exclusive contract runs out with Apple.

Re: Iphone G3 battery life...

for best battery life i find that setting all data such as mail etc to only check manually....otherwise it checks like every 15 - 30 min and eats up battery a lot...

Remember too, that all batterys have a memory and when you purchase these toys deplete the battery until it is dead and then charge the battery from full depletion. If you don't do this your battery will be charged from the last memory charge. This is what I have learned the hard way with some of my other phones and handhelds.

Not all batteries develope memory spots. If it's a Lithium Ion battery and I would guess it is, this will not be an issue. Also, I'm sure that the phone has trickle charge circuitry, so when the battery is charged it doesn't get overcharged while remaning plugged in.

Things to help battery life on any phone would be, turn of Bluetooth when not in use. If you are without a signal, put the phone in standalone mode. If possible turn of the wifi antenna when not using it. Setting update features to manual as stated. All these things will suck power when they are on even when not in use.

I just made this switch. So far I havent had any problem with service- and the iPhone plan will be about $10 bucks a month cheaper than my Verizon plan. I have noticed I get more bars with Verizon- but there hasnt been a noticeable difference.

As a phone I think its better than my Blackberry Pearl. Contacts are a little different and takes a few min to get used to. Its easier to mute, join 2 calls, and turn speaker on/off. Its all one touch-one button- Blackberry was touch/scroll/touch/confirm- i cant tell you how many calls I lost doing that.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the iPhone can manage it's charging as long as you are using the OEM charger and leaving it on the charger will not hurt the battery. I know why you are saying this, as old NiMH batteries would be killed this way for sure. Furthermore, Apple actually recommends not letting the battery go all the way down each time before charging. In fact, I think they even state it's never necessary with the iPhone, even though they say do it once a month or so on their laptops. I still recommend letting it run down a couple times when it's new, but that's another story.

The reason I think Apple doesn't recommend letting it run down each time is that the battery is only good for a limited number of charge cycles, and each time it's fully drained, it uses a whole charge cycle to charge it. While this really won't affect the batteries life in the long run, it'll make it seem like the battery goes bad more quickly, which in turn will turn into bad press for Apple. If your battery is half drained and you charge it, you have only used one half of a charge cycle.

I actually sold cell phones when Lithium Ion batteries were starting to get popular and really the only thing that would kill those batteries beside age is using crappy chargers because they weren't the correct voltage or amperage or whatever (I'm no electrician).

Anyway, leaving it on the charger all night won't kill your battery in the iPhone.

Edit... Apple does recommend one full charge cycle per month on the iPhone now.

You can set it to check automatically at different intervals. However, I find that setting it to push email is the best as far as battery. Then you can manually check it (as you need to because the push function doesn't always work well) and it is supposed to just update each time you have a new email.

I feel like turning push email off- defeats the purpose of the new iphone.
