Bike storage

Hey guys,

So this past weekend I bought myself a new Trek Y-11 frame bike so that I have an exercise tool up at my house. I have my other Trek mountain bike down at my girlfriend's house (about 1 hour away) and my $150 target special just wasn't cutting it anymore!! Anyhow, still living at home has posed some storage issues with my new bike. My father uses our outside shed as his lawnmower/storage facility and we don't have a garage anymore (now the family living room). I don't want to have to keep taking the wheels on and off the bike each time that I want to ride it as this could ultimately pose a piece on the bike breaking in the long run. I would like to store the bike in my bedroom, but space is limited. Does anyone know of any product out there that can make storing the bike in my room any easier? Please let me know if you guys have or have heard of anything that can help me out!!

Thanks!!!!

Jonathan

Re: Bike storage

You have several good choices. The simplest is to get a simple storage hook and screw that into a joist in the ceiling or wall stud. You can also get several other types of holders. A good selection can be seen here:

I use this one in my garage: http://www.rei.com/product/543382

Yup, any bike shop should have a rubber coated hook that screws into a joist. I had my bike on one for years with no issues.you can mount it so the bike is inches from the ceiling if you like.

Re: Bike storage

I currently have 6 bikes hanging upside down on both wheels from my garage rafters using bike hooks.
But for years when I lived in an apartment I hung my bike on one wheel from the ceiling in a corner using a 99 cent bike hook. That's really all you need if you have a standard ceiling.

Re: Bike storage

If I can't find a place to put/hang the bike (it is a mountain bike) is it bad for me to keep taking the wheels off of the frame each time that I ride it when I m done to store it in the basement?

i still struggle to put my front tire on and off quickly. but other than that I couldnt see how it would adversely affect your bike (other than the time it takes to actually do it)

you can also just buy an extra skewer (quick release), take the front wheel off and hook from there if you are tight on space.

To answer your question, there's nothing wrong with taking your wheels off each time you store the bike. You may end up with more grease on your drive-side chainstay, but that's about it.

Check this out:

No holes in the wall either.

Here's another:

If you're worried about how this works with a Y bike, look at the gadget they have for adding a 'top tube' thing for use on a bike rack. I've never liked storing wheels by hanging them, I'm superstitious that they'll pull out of round.
