Big Bend Texas Trip

I've been MIA the past week since I've been in Big Bend Texas. It was a great time to hike, canoe and go mountain biking in one of the few isolated parts left in Texas. Had a great time since I love the outdoors and wildlife.

Canoeing the Rio Grande between US and Mexico. Can you see us?

Half-way up our 7.2 mile hike.

Sounds like a great trip - the picture shows an incredible site - I may have to go there someday.

Texas IS God's Country after all.

Glad you made it safely, Daniel. I just got the following email from SMU: "Steven A. Smith, a sophomore Economics died on Saturday, December 17, 2005, in Big Bend State Park in an accident on a biking trip with his family. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, at Palm Valley Lutheran Church, Round Rock, Texas."

Big Bend rocks. It really is an amazing place that offers just about every type of lanscape. Whats really nice about it is the lack of people. Its so far removed not many paople visit it. Did you make the boat across the river to Boquillas? Great place to sit in the desert while enjoying a smoke and cerveza

We went to BBNP for the first time in '04 and the authorities have really tightened the border (and unfortunately nearly killed the existence of Boquillas).

Those are some great pics Danimal. Is that canoe pic at Santa Elena Canyon?

Quite frankly I'm shocked and disappointed to see my name used in a biking accident. It would behoove you to check your facts before declaring my demise. You know this. I know this.

That's terrible to hear. It really is dangerous out there. At one point, coming back down the mountain on the bike, it's really steep and the drop off is a few hundred feet. I almost fish-tailed at one point and from then on I started walking my bike on parts that were too steep with loose gravel. Scary to think that occurred the day after we biked.

What, was the guy your buddy? If so, apologies. Otherwise, otherwise. Steven A. Smith, same name as the bombastic one on ESPN.

Re: Big Bend Texas Trip

Daniel,

I met Pancho Villa's last wife or I guess you could say his most loyal wife in Chihuahua at her home. She told us the story of how Pancho Villa was assassinated by his enemies, who so feared him they staged snipers all along the rooftops in anticipation of his arrival by auto, the old open carriage type. And when he arrived at his destination and started from his auto, they shot him multiple times simultaneously in the heart. This was done so he wouldn't have time to grab his pistols and shoot them all. He died before his body hit the ground. As told by the little spanish lady in the home that afternoon. That was sometime in the mid 70's. I was 14 or so.
