Thanks, JB. I was hoping that there would be a few others with alarm systems, though. Guess I am just glad most of the gorillas live in safe areas.

I also have APX. It's got the voice deal on it so you can talk directly to them through the keypad interface if needed. Haven't had any equipment issues at all.

We have the main keypad with voice, door sensors, motion detectors, remote keypad and three remote key fobs.

Last month the power company upgraded my service - ran new lines - so the power was out for about 5 hours. APX called to make sure everything was okay - they called our cell phones. Apparently their monitoring system showed us as being off line.

Also you may want to check with your insurance company to see if they have discounts set up with anyone.

Re: Opinions on Alarm Systems?

Consider getting her a safe for her valuables.

If the townhome is rented, see if she can get permission to mount the safe (worst they can do is say no).

What that will do is force them to make a targeted heist to get a 400lb object out of there...those usually end badly, as they are far more likely to bungle it up. If it's wall/floor anchored...tehy will have hell trying to remove it.

They are expensive (a burglary rated safe I think was about $700 at the cheapest last time I checked), but is very much worth it.

I keep one in my apartment myself to store some valuables in. Non-anchored...the apartment folks said no to that idea. However it's location makes it hell to try to remove.

Another APX user here.
APX was in the hood installing systems for free to build customers.
Long story short is we were able to talk them into more than usual for free.....try this
Also, after the trial install, I exercised my option to cancel obligation free..... do this too, It got me a much better rate.
In all, a $34.99/mo GSM, battery backed up, monitored system.
With lifetime warranty.

Not bad. Same set up as RGD. Key fobs and two-way voice comms.

A safe is a good way to go. I spent a few bucks on mine but I have a much better piece of mind when I leave the house.
