Another Gun Thread, need opinions (pics)

Alright so Im looking to buy a rifle that I will be using for target shooting, varmit, and fun. I am really interested in a bolt action or AR style rifle. There are a few Im looking at. I really like Rock River Arms because of their reliability and price (lookin to spend around $1000)

Mid length A2/A4 in .223

Standard length A2/A4 in .223

Mid length A2/A4 in 6.8 Rem

Sig 556

I would also like to buy a bolt action rifle in .223, .308 or .338mag. I really like the Remington 700 or Browning X-Bolt

Remington 700

Browning X-bolt hunter

If you wanted to build an AR yourself you could assemble it in about an hour for about $700. PM Ratters, he can supply you with links. I think he and JJeffery did his just recently for about that.

Ive thought about this and RRA has kits for $690 and I dont need an FFL to order them. I just need to find someone with a FFL to ship the lower receiver to

If you want something cheap and fun, consider a surplus Mauser 98 (German, Czech or Belgian) or US 1903 Springfield. Still pretty plentiful on the market, ammo's not hard to find, and they're solid as a rock.

Get a 20" barrel or longer (Bushmaster V-match is nice). Don't waste your time on carbines or shorter barrels. If you are really going to use the rifle to hit a target, buy a long barrel. I have 2 AR-15's with 24", 20", 16" & 14.5" uppers and have been shooting M-16's and now M-4's for almost 20 years in the military and can tell you the shorty barrels just aren't as accurate for an average shooter.

For the same reason (the goal is for you to hit your target), don't build your own upper. Buy a matched upper/bolt combination. Again, see what Bushmaster has to offer. I have been very impressed with Bushmaster, it's worth it to spend a couple extra dollars for a lifetime of better shots.

Tiki I just took a look at the bushmaster and really like the A3 DCM-XR series. One thing I need your opinion is on barrels. Do u like chorme lined or ChromeMoly Steel or Polished Stainless Steel Barrels?

I run an rock river ar-15 I have approx. 17000 rounds through it and have no had anything break yet. If you do get an ar make sure you get a flat top model because this gives you more options for optics.

Re: Another Gun Thread, need opinions (pics)

6.8 is spensive to shoot. Damn, 5.56 is bad enough. For what you want to do I'd look at a nice 20" barrel A4 setup. There are lots of good brands out there now. One upgrade I'd look into is an aftermarket trigger. Stock AR triggers suck. I have a RRA 2 stage on mine and it's nice but if I had to do it over again I'd get a Jewel or maybe a Chip McCormik drop in. Building yourself is pretty easy and fun to see how it's all put together and it'd be easier to configure exactly the gun you want. But most of the big manufacturers have a nice range of options on their stock rifles as well.

Don't ya love gun shoppin?

Re: Another Gun Thread, need opinions (pics)

For your stated purposes, you need to get the AR with the longer (20") barrel.

When choosing any gun for a stated purpose, it is almost always best first ensure you have decided the true purpose(s), then determine the features that best support that purpose, then find the gun (chambering, action type, magazine type, weight/dimensions, -- in that order usually -- then make/model).

Of course if the true purpose is to fill a niche in a collection or "just because I want it", then the decision process is much streamlined.

Depends on

a) how much "gun bling" you want and

b) how much ammo you plan on putting through it at what rate of speed.

For what you are saying you want to use the rifle for, a standard chrome-lined barrel will be just fine.

billhud's post hit the nail on the head. Buy what you need, or what you want, but sometimes what you want isn't what you need. AR-15 type weapons are particularly prone to being more eye candy than a tool.

Not if he gets an M1A (semi-auto). But there's no way you can stay in a $1000 budget for one that's halfway decent.

I love my M&P 15.

I am going to be building one soon though. I have a CMMG 1:7 twist upper and a Rock River Arms Lower.
