Mac Computer Help

This morning when I turned on my G4 Powerbook (1.67 Ghz) it came up with a "Stack Corrupt CPU=8 System Failure" error. Rebooted, and everything seems to be OK. I think tonight I'm going to do a complete wipe and install.

Can someone tell me what that means? Thanks

Bad RAM can cause all kinds of weird errors...it's one those things where you've tried everything to fix a problem and then it turns out it is a bad RAM stick. That is very tough to diagnose.

Yeah I'm going to switch the sticks and see if it's the stick or the slot, we'll see

I know there is a sale going on right now for Ram. 4 gigs for cheap and you can get 2 gigs for a really good price.... maybe not a bad time to upgrade?

Not to harp on the PC thing... but there is a free program for the PC called "Memtest86". Its a self-loading, bootable CD, that launches a dedicated memory test. It is exceptionally usefull at weeding out bad memory. Now, I don't think there is a Mac version (maybe there is... anyone?), however, you could always drop your memory in a PC that will accept it and test it there.

Just a thought.

crucial.com always has good prices. There is a sale somewhere for 4gigs right now (not sure if you need that much) but I have to go find it. 2 gigs should be fine though if you have been doing well with 1.

edit: just make sure you buy the correct kind

If it's actually a bad slot, this would be the 2nd time I've had to replace it and it's out of warranty so the local Apple repair store wants just 100 to diagnose the problem

I have extended care on newer Macs. My G5 IMac and My MacBook. Some people think its a rip-off but the technical phone assistance itself is worth its weight in gold.

Never really had a problem with it other than this, and the first time it happened it was still under the factory warranty. it's a 50/50 shot at buying stuff like that, ya just never know.
