DVD backup

I have damaged many good movies due to my carelessness and clumsiness and i finally got a PC with a dvd burner. So now i would like to backup my DVD collection.I did some research online and there are a lot of issues with piracy. I do not want to do anything illegal of course. Can i get in trouble for backing up my own dvd's? What would be a good software to use?

dvdshrink is an easy one to use, that will do most..there are other software suites you can use in conjunction to bypass encryption. If you own that DVD and you do not distribute it, then it's my understanding you're doing it legally..now if you burn it, let a friend borrow either copy and keep one copy yourself while they are in possession of the other, then that's illegal.

Some say yes, some say no. I do it and have no regrets.

To decrypt I use AnyDVD and to re-encode I use DVD Rebuilder Professional with HCenc. Though a simple transcoder will work fine like DVD Shrink.

Re: DVD backup

I use DVD Fab as well. DVD Shrink is good but hasn't been updated in a long while so some of the new copy protection schemes will cause it to choke. I like to back up all of my kids' movies to disc so that they're just the movie with no previews, ads, or menus. Just pop in the DVD and it starts playing the movie like it should.

Until the SCOTUS makes a final weigh in on this the answer is unclear. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act specifically prohibits breaking the copyright encryption on digital media, so it is unclear if that trumps the Fair Use doctrines previously established in case law.

Correct. It isn't illegal to copy a DVD per se, only to break the copy protection. This is beat to death every court case I get into that involves pirated material. That said, never seen a successful prosecution for it on any of my cases.

W/r/t the actual archiving of DVD's, I think its a total waste of time. You need to really beat the crap out of your discs for it to be useless, and you'd need to damage a lot of them to make it worth backing up your entire collection. On the flipside, I converted 7,000 CD's to lossless file format - for accessibility from my computer direct to my hi-fi system.

How bout I send my girlfriend's kids over to peruse your dvd collection?
Those little booger eaters can clear through 100 dvd's in five minutes and make coasters out of all of them.
I used to use DVDxCopy when it first came out, used a fistful of programs prior to that and made more coasters than backups.
I buy dvd media for pennies a piece when all that stuff goes on sale on Black Friday, making sure I have enough to last me through the year. That way the kids can junk all the dvd's they want and it's no sweat.
I use dvdfab now, have for a long time. I love it.
