Current issue of Macworld addresses the question of do you need anti virus protection for Macs.
Great reading.
Bottom line, for most/common users, you don't.
However, although I may have saved you buying it or reading it, there is some good additional information on how to better protect yourself.

Never used one, not sure I ever would unless a real threat presents itself.
