Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

Ok, so this laptop has Vista Basic, SP2 on it now, and I have been throwing around the idea of upgrading to Home Premium. The cost is $79 and I get quite a few more features, including the one I really like, the media center (which I don't have on basic) I would also get Aero, which is supposed to be good, so what say you Is it worth it, or is it

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

I wouldn't base my decision on Aero, then again I just switched to XP from 2000 Pro last summer because 2000 didn't have DRM that my mp3 player supported. I think the media center functionality would be the deciding factor. I personally won't touch Vista with a 10 ft pole but then again my PC needs are pretty basic. If you plan on using your PC with your home entertainment system, go for it. There are Linux media center alternatives that are free but a bit more hassle. Don't let my comments be the deciding factor. Good luck in your PC adventures!

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

Just got vista home premium, but I haven't played with it much. I will say this... if freezes when it's coming out of sleep, after I put in my password the screen goes black and won't come back. (must've heard the joke and agreed with it)

I'll have to play around with the media center this weekend and figure out what the heck aero is.

I was stupid enough to run out and not only buy vista but a new jazzed up laptop so I could use all the cool features. I am typing this on a laptop that is two years older running XP. All you need to know. I seriously do not have the time and patience to go into why, but Aero is a gimmick you will get tired off, applications crashing regularly, having to always power down to prevent random wakes from hybernate, the fact that it is 3x slower then first installed after the 100+ updates, in case you dont get the message:

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

I've been using vista 64 bit premium since shortly after SP1 came out. No problems, it is quite a bit more stable than XP was, and it will actually recognize more than 2.4gb of ram. The only caveat there is that your PC hardware must be fairly robust to be able to handle it. If you are running 1 or 2gb of ram and an older CPU and video card, don't bother. If you have a high end machine, it's worth it, IMO.

BTW, I think the hardware requirements would be the major reason for the fact that no larger companies are running Vista. It's simply not worth the money it would cost them to replace all their existing PC hardware for an OS upgrade. They will get there eventually, but it's not enough of an incentive by itself.

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

Hmmm.. this is interesting... I haven't really had any problems with basic, aside from it wiping everything out on this computer once when I attempted to update to SP2... Maybe I ought to just stick with basic, as it seems to be working.

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

I love the Vista Home Premium. I have had mine for a year now and have never had a crash or any other issues with it. Aero is pretty cool and the media center is excellent.

The media center is ok, but aero is nothing to write home about. It's like Compiz fusion, only much suckier.

I have it on both computers and it runs great. Just make sure you have enough memory or it will slow things down considerably.

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

I've been using Vista Home Premium (32-bit) for about 16 months and have had no major complaints. Make sure you get 3 or 4 gigs of RAM, which is relatively cheap these days. Vista is a bit different than XP and it's kinda fun to tweak the new features like Readyboost and Aero. The mild amusement lasted about two weeks for me...

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

This laptop only has 1 gig of memory, but I have no problems upgrading the memory if the upgrade ends up being worth it for me.

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

The reality is that we will all eventually end up on vista. I have it on one machine (ultimate- because I also needed remote desktop) and it has been okay.

Your gonna want to bump that up to 2gigs if you upgrade Scot. It will drag otherwise.

Re: Upgrade to Vista Home Premium worth it?

In my experience, Aero is a resource hog, but I like it so it stays on. It's just another gadget though, and the novelty does wear off. However, after you have it on for a while you get used to it and the computer looks "low-tech" if you disable it
