Internet connection help
Hello all,
I am in need of some help. I just signed up for the Mediacom Online Max and should be getting up to 20mb of download speed. When I tested this I am getting closer to 2mb. When I plug the computer directly into the modem I am close to the 20mb but when I plug it back into the router I only get about 2mb. Here is my configuration with router The modem is from Mediacom and is used for my internet connection and phone service from Mediacom. The modem is connected to a Dlink DGL-4500 router and the router is connected to a Dlink DSS-24+ 24-Port 10/100 Switch. Through all that I have two desktops, a Wii, Xbox, PS3, LocationFree and Tivo wired into both the switch and the router. I also have a wireless network camera and a tivo that connects through wireless. As I said, when I connect one computer directly to the modem I am getting the higher speeds but when I connect through the router and switch it slows down to 2 mb. Does anyone have any suggetions? Does anyone here have any suggestions? |

Re: Internet connection help
If some of your devices are older, they may not be Wifi-N compatible. Like Mikey said above, try and adjust your settings. I also found on my router that I get much better speeds by selecting a channel other than the default. There are 3 other wireless networks that I can pick up and I believe they all operate on the default channel. I set mine to something different and consistantly get over 16mb d/l over WiFi.

Re: Internet connection help
It's actually not the wireless I am having problems with. It is the wired connection

Re: Internet connection help
Have you tried unplugging all of the other equipment one at a time to see if it makes any difference?
Have you tried it being connected only through the router and/or only through the switch with no other equipment connected? This would be a good starting point to see what might be causing the problem.

Re: Internet connection help
Didn't do any research on your equipment, so if I'm missing something obvious, I apologize.
Lots of routers divide up the BW into equal shares to each port. This results in a consistent, but lower effective BW. Switches give all the BW to each of the ports as they need it. This results in greater BW, but you might get a sense of lag or latency as your port is waiting for another port to be serviced. Sounds like you might have a router.

Re: Internet connection help
Ok, I know I am going to sound really stupid but I figured it out. It was the last thing I thought about checking. It was the firmware on the router. Now that I have updated that everything is working just dandy.
Thanks for all the help guys. |
