Golf Help: Buying new Iron set....

Hey all,

I'm looking at buying a new set of irons and a new driver. By new, I mean new for me. Don't want to spend a lot of cash, and have been looking seriously at the Tour Edge brand, specifically the Geomax Bazookas. Anyone have any opinions on these? Even their new driver looks pretty impressive.

Also looking at picking up some used Calloways......

Opinions?.....

Re: Golf Help: Buying new Iron set....

best bet.... go to a golfsmith or golf galaxy, or whatever place that will allow you the following:

-demo clubs
-record your swing
-fit you properly.. (vital part.. if you dont do this, then just buy a 50 dollar set because if the clubs arent the right size, you might as well us a hockey stick)

most places like this have used, or demo'd clubs for sale.. i would do that.. I started golfing a few years ago with a cheap set from Dick's.. As i started to get better, i went and got fitted.. I realized that my clubs were terribly under-sized for me, I was using flex shafts when i needed more stiff, and my loft on my driver was way too low.

get fitted, get tested, and get a good set of clubs used.. Rather get a better quality set used, then get a poor(er) quality set new. Golf clubs will last for years if properly maintained, and you should get the best quality set you can afford. (Dont take out a second mortgage, but dont go cheap)

hope this helps.

BTW I hit the Calloway X-20's which are great clubs. They are on sale now at golfsmith, and I have a coupon code for like 10-20% off you purchase (online or in store). If you want the code, pm me and ill look for it.

Callaway All The Way! You can not go wrong on a set of great clubs and an outstanding company that will stand behind them 100% if anything happens to them. I hit the X-18's and love them, about to buy the Forged.

That's exactly what I was thinking..... Whatever I do, I'll make sure to get fitted. I'm 6'1" so my brother was also suggesting extensions & re-gripping, but Whatever I do, I'll be sure to get fitted. I'm going to head to the store here in Ottawa to test drive some Calloways for sure.

Re: Golf Help: Buying new Iron set....

As some one who this year got a set of good used titlists after having used a cheap clubs for 3-4 years these guys are giving you some good advice. To illustrate the difference here is what changed for me. I could play with my old ones but it made it very hard to groove my swing because even if I was consistant the clubs weren't. I didn't get any spin off them so I always had to try to anticipate roll and that just didn't work well. My new clubs I hit in a about a 5 yard diameter circle. When the ball lands it sticks. I can actually hold a green now which takes a ton of strokes off your game. It makes all the difference in the world and will help you get better faster. You don't have to spend a lot of money or get the hottest technology just get good quality used like Calloway, Cleveland, Cobra, Mizuno, Titleist whatever you like and fits for you. Best of luck.

Re: Golf Help: Buying new Iron set....

Best peice of advice I can give is buy OLD models. I am all kitted out in taylor made. I update clubs regularly. Right now I could probably replace my entire bag for ~$700 but have spend at least $1500 on it. Why, golf companies rapidly drop prices when new models arrive. My clubs are generations -3, I have a friend who is gen -1 and one who is gen -5, all taylor made. We have all swicthed clubs and the differences are minial (especially with the irons and believe it or not, the high priced drivers). Driver technology rocketed for a few years but truth of the matter is there is not mych between drivers from 4 years ago and today (shafts are a much more important choice then head IMHO as most heads are so similar these days). So my advice is check online for at least -2 generation stuff, save a ton of cash for clubs that will play 95% the same.

Just give it up, Chris! Take up bowling or curling. Lot cheaper playing equipment!

I'm a Titleist guy. Can't recommend anything other than that.

Re: Golf Help: Buying new Iron set....

Get fit correctly. Don't go to some dork at Golfsmith. Visit a PGA professional who uses a computer assisted dynamic fitting system. Forget about the brands. buy what fits and works.

Your 6'1, I'm 6'2. That doesn't mean squat. My shafts are +1/2 inch, but my buddy is 6'4 and his shafts are standard. He has long a$$ arms and I have short arms. You get the point.

Here is a little tip. Golf is about the shaft. Buy what fits you not what is cool. End of story.

Good Luck!!!

Gee thanks. The curling shot hurts the most.

Tested a 6 iron Callaway and 6 iron Tour Edge. Tour Edge went on average about 10-15 farther. Guy said is was the shaft(s). The Callaway did feel better though.
