Fear over experiment to recreate Big Bang

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,418204,00.html

Some scientist are concerned over a test that is going to happen on Wednesday to try and learn more about the big bang theory by slamming sub-atomic particles together at the speed of light. Those opposed to the test fear that it could create tiny black holes in the middle of the earth that will slowly get larger and destroy the earth.

"Nothing will happen for at least four years," retired German Otto Rossler told the Mail. "Then someone will spot a light ray coming out of the Indian Ocean during the night and no one will be able to explain it."

Did some further reading and the guy running the test said the German scientist doesn't know what he is talking about and that they have showed him the errors in his predictions.

Not sure what to think, I know some people are trying to stop the test but don't know what success they are having. Also I have no where near the knowledge to decide for myself whether the test is risky or not.... I just hope it isn't.

Re: Fear over experiment to recreate Big Bang

Unfortunately there are always going to be people saying such things about any "huge" test. Look at genetic engineering. Although it does cause some concern when someone says a quasar is going to be formed inside earth. If this doesn't happen it will later on privately. I don't know enough about sub atomic particle acceleration but I was pretty sure they were already doing this to determine/create neutrinos to study. Well it was nice knowing you if something does go wrong.

thanks for the link. Looks like we won't need to age any of our stogies longer than 4 years! Same link has the hottest rap on YouTube. Who says physics is geeky now.

Similar fears were voiced before the first test of a live atomic device back in WWII.

Also, particle accelerators and colliders have been used for some time, have they not?

I think if Im not mistaken the particle acceleratos have been in use since the 60s...if i can remember correctly from physics class...i dont know for sure tho, i was not always ...sober in that class....

The mad scientist who claims it could destroy the world says it would be 4 years before we noticed. That would mean that the world would end in 2012. The Mayan and Aztec calendars end in 2012.

Those calendars are also round, so there really is no ending in a circle is there?

Re: Fear over experiment to recreate Big Bang

I wonder what number this makes for a Doomsday prediction? Each generation puts out a Doomsday prophecy and if you really want to read more about how many there have been check this link (http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm). It's 2008 and we're still here and I have a feeling we'll be here until the end of times which won't be decided by anything human, I assure everyone. I think I'd rather believe in Divine Providence than someone who tells me that everything we see around us came from a "big bang", thats like saying my car just appeared in my garage and I'm pissed cuz I wanted leather interior. Can't wait to see how all of this plays out and I'm sure that my last day on earth will be spent smoking a good cigar, just like every day.
