I realize you aren't sure, but if the drive is not mechanically broken, try Spinrite, nada. http://www.grc.com/intro.htm

Buy a Hitachi internal drive and then put it in a external case. That is all an external drive is. Hitachi drives seem to be the best in terms of reliability. Even those of limited technical skills could put an internal drive in a case.

You're welcome to send it to my lab. While we don't have the time to mess with hardware faults, anything logical can usually be handled by my rookies.

As an aside, I notice there are a few recommendations for recovery software. Personally, I don't recommend it. It's potentially a one shot deal.

If you have reputable local computer repair center, give them a try. I've seen my guys get data off drives that I would have thought were long gone. We've only had to send drives to data recovery places twice in the 3 years I've been doing the IT consulting thing. One of those customers had to shell out $17,000!

EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard has a free trial download. Install the trial and run it, it should detect the external hd ( it did for me ) It took a few hours but worked.

Mayor, just to rule out the obvious, did you plug another device into the USB port to rule out a defective port before you drive yourself nuts with the drive?
