Tivo User-Hardrive upgrade?

I know I can check over on the Tivo message boards for this, but I thought I would ask here also.

Has anyone ever upgraded the harddrive on their tivo? If so, how hard was it to do? Any tips you can give?

I am wanting to put this one in my Series 3 because the current drive has gone bad.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Might have an issue due to the fact that you cannot copy over your old drive... You might want to call this company - http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-upgrade.php

Yeah, the drive would have to be prepped... (guessing formatted with specific system files installed). They do it there for a fee... I will keep digging.

Re: Tivo User-Hardrive upgrade?

I used the weaknees software to upgrade my DirecTV Tivo box about a year ago. The process was pretty painless.

Well I think I can do it using this tool http://mfslive.org/download.htm

I am just wondering how hard it really is.

If you've ever replaced a hard drive in a computer you can do this. It's a piece of cake.

Re: Tivo User-Hardrive upgrade?

Are you just looking to increase the size and thus the amount you can store on the Tivo? I'm just curious.

I'm not handy at all but I've been trying to figure out a way to upload episodes from my Tivo onto my computer or ipod...

Any of you folks know how I can do that?

Re: Tivo User-Hardrive upgrade?

I would like to increase the size, but my main reason for doing it is because the current drive in the Tivo is failing. It works when the cable isn't plugged in but when it is it goes very slow. After doing some research it seems to be the drive failing and not being able to write the shows.

As far as getting the shows to your computer/ipod you can use the tivo desktop software found at tivo.com. You can transfer shows to your computer then as long as you have a network set up. To get it to your ipod using this software you will have to pay for the upgraded verison. however I know there is freeware out there that will allow you to do this also.
