What was your favorite job?

I know most everyone here has held more than one job in their lifetime. I was wondering what everyone's favorite was and why?

I'd like to say my favorite job is the Air Force, however that could not be further from the truth.

My favorite job was being a bouncer for 2.5 yrs up in Anchorage Alaska at the largest and most popular bar, Chilkoot Charlies or Koots. I had a lot of fun and the camaraderie that comes with being on the security staff is bar none. Did I mention beautiful women, who loved bouncers?

I had a great time, mind you I was in tons of brawls, other physical altercations, and had been shot at, none-the-less. I'd do it again at Koots, if I had the chance, I miss my boys.

That's my story.

How about you?

Re: What was your favorite job?

My favorite job was my first in Orlando 17 years ago.

I managed a Tiki Bar poolside in a hotel.

The management was never around and I wasn't much of a manger, so we drank beer all day and flirted with girls, hooking up frequently.

My uniform was whatever Hawaiian shirt I had clean and a pair of shorts.

The tips were good, Jimmy Buffet played on the stereo, and the stress was minimal.

I was single, had all my hair, and normally got a waterski set in before work as I lived across the lake and had a roomate with a Mastercraft. I'd cut my right arm off to have those days back.

When I was in college, spending 3 summers as a ranger in the Mount Washington area, followed by being certified as a Maine Hunting Guide and doing my first hunt.

Re: What was your favorite job?

I've bagged groceries at Harris-Teeter, managed a Pizza Hut, managed a Burger King, and am currently a high school teacher.

Teaching beats all of them, although it does have its bad days (such as today).

Making coffee for rich people. It was crazy awesome for a 15-year-old. One day Caroline Kennedy, the next Billy Joel.

Did the same deal here in Buffalo. The love of the job was short lived, after that I hated it...but it got to be more than fists. Never again.

Favorite job was either working at Sears as a mechanic, mainly f'in around with a really fun group of guys and hitting on the girls in the rest of the store or my last job....they hired a bunch of engineers from all over (whoever could come) to fix a large construction project that had gone down the drain big time. The most diverse and interesting group of characters ever, and I got to run the show for my discipline. Plus we all made a point to spend at least 4 hours a night drinking together after work! Far too many stories were told...

Re: What was your favorite job?

My first real full time job when I was 18. I worked in a detail shop. We had a combination of guys who managed to get the work done and still had fun doing it all. Sure it was 9-11 hours a day six days a week but we were all young and it didn't seem so bad for a kid fresh out of high school. I also worked at the same place for a year after I got out of the army, working full-time, going to school full-time and drawing my GI benefits. It wasn't as fun that time but it wasn't bad and I did make foreman.

Re: What was your favorite job?

My job now is my favorite, though different assignments have brought different levels of satisfaction. My time in a multi-jurisdictional Gang Unit wasa highlight, but so is my job now. I get to mentor a lot of young adults coming onto the job. I realize that when I am gone, I am gone...but if those I mentor become all they can be, that is my legacy.

Did a lot of bouncing in my younger years. Two years in a completely redneck Country Western bar in central Florida....My Detroit attitude was a big hit amongst the locals. Guns pulled more than once, but never got shot. When I was a couple years older, did some Chicago-area clubs. Lots of young suburban kids....I preferred the rednecks.

Also was head of security for special events at Northern Illinois University my senior year. Interviewed and hired my own staff, and planned security at evenets ranging from concerts (Cheap Trick, R.E.M., Ray Charles, Violent Femmes, etc) to special speaking engagements by controversial figures like Louis Farrakhan. A true learning experience.

The Stones should have hired you instead of HA for their concert at Altamont.

Re: What was your favorite job?

I've worked 6 years at McDonald's, 3 summers at a fire department, and the rest in the lab doing research/teaching. I'd have to say my favorite thus far were the three summers at the fire department. I enjoyed the work and felt like I was making a difference. More importantly I made some great friendships and I still keep in contact with those guys.

Re: What was your favorite job?

I got shot at by an AK-47 from a group of Jamaicans in an SUV. I hid behind a large Winnebago type RV. Luckily, the SWAT arrived shortly after and they were gone.

Anyone who gets shot at by Jamaicans in Alaska, whether its an AK or a spitball gun, has a hell of a story

Re: What was your favorite job?

My job right now is pretty good. Take pictures of youth sport teams. In summer we are generally outside... and many times will have long breaks between teams to just soak up the sun and bum around.
