When kids drive too fast down our street, I just talk to their parents. Same as other neighbors did when I was stupid and drove too fast down the street. If you don't know them and don't want to confront them, leave a well written not in their mail.

Take an egg with you, when you walk your kids. If a driver is really reckless he/she deserves a good egging. If ever they stop and get out irate, tell them "So sorry, but you drove through here way too fast and you scared me so much I just had this kneejerk reaction and the egg must have slipped. If the egg is allowed to try it will not look good on the car's paint. Will serve him as a reminder who not to mess with. I really like the pool hose idea, too.

Ok i don't know how wide your street is, but what we do is:

Park cars on either side of the street in a manner that disrupts the ability to soar in a straight line.
Cars now have to zigzag through the street. No way they can pick up speed. Plus it's very anoying so they take a different route.

Other option:

Have the kids throw water balloons on the windshields of speeders. The moment it hits them it scares the shite out off them. But once they realize what could have happened (that it could have been a kid!), they'll slow down for good.

What I have also seen is bright orange fluorecent statues of kids with a flag in their hands, with the words "slow down" on them.

Or lay down some garden hoses (1/2 inch) filled with water. That could slow them down to. But it's the same with speed bumps, it only slows them down for that particular bit.

Bad idea here. If the person would crash, the liability would be placed on the person throwing the water balloon and ultimately the parent/guardian of the kid who threw it. This goes the same for the hose (think if a motorcycle hits the hose and goes onto its side). Anything you do to alter the roadway would put you in liability.

I do think the idea about writing the parents a letter is good if you can find out who it is.

My suggestion would be to get the license plate, and perhaps write a letter to that person, even if you don't know who it is. Include the date time and violation and see if the police will either mail your letter to the owber oif the vehicle or if they will not do that see if they will mail there own warning letter to the owner of the vehicle. The owner of the car is what the police will find out when they run the plate. Even though the owner may not be the driver, they can simply put that someone (description added) was driving there car in a dangerous manner on this street at a particular time. It's better than nothing.

Re: Fast drivers in neighborhood

Not too many speeders on my street, its a dead end. However, there is one young girl, probably 17 yrs. that always floors her jeep all the way to her house at the end of the road. Last year one of my cats got hit by a car in front of my house. After three surgerys and about $4000, hes alive, with a bad limp. Im not sure who hit him but everybody drives really slow, except one, the jeep. Im not saying it was her but it makes me angery every time she speeds past. Ive asked her to slow down many times and I told her about my cat getting hit out front, she looked at her boyfriend in the passenger seat and giggled. I dont ask her to slow down anymore, I yell at her or I act like Im jumping in front of her car, she floors it and swerves. I havent called the police because that would make it worse I think.

Interesting, I can't get my vette out of the driveway without scraping the front airdam...from the looks of that speedbump it doesn't look too bad. Again, my town uses the EMS excuse so no means to slow down emergency vehicles permitted.

I've tried the "catch their attention" idea - I usually walk with a tennis ball and have used it to initiate several 'conversations' regarding speed with motorists, but again, I'm looking to not have to physically confront anyone anymore. Trust me, yelling at old ladies and hitting trailer trash gets old after awhile. Besides, then the trailer trash knows where you live...

Will be continuing to pursue the police angle, getting license plates, etc.

Akicita - You're much calmer than me. If I knew who was doing it, really bad things would happen - I am trying to avoid this at all costs, so kudos to you for not duct taping her to her jeep and lighting it on fire.

Re: Fast drivers in neighborhood

I live on an Ave. in Philadelphia and it is ridiculous how fast people go just to get to the next red light. I used to take it in stride before my daughter was born but now it really freaks me out. There aren't many driveways so we park on the side of the street so to cross you have to go in between parked cars and that can be tough to see a car going 50-60mph in time if you are not 6'+. I spend some time with my baby stroller (empty ) and wait for the speeders then start to push it out in the street so they get a little heart attack. It makes me feel better but I can't say it has changed a thing.

I scrape going in/out of my driveway as well unless I put some wood planks in the gutter to ease the incline. A combo of the suspension/front bumper with integrated splitters puts my low point at 2.5" of clearance.

Re: Fast drivers in neighborhood

get a bunch of firecrackers and as soon as you see somebody coming towards you with high speed, try to let one of the firecrackers explode near their car. That will get their attention and deny that the firecracker was yours to aviod liability

Actually, the best thing IMHO would be just record the blatant violators on video and turn it over to your local PD. You would not be violating any laws by doing so that way. Get the plate numbers as well if possible.

All joking aside, as tempting as throwing stuff in front of the car sounds, and screaming bad names to the drivers (could lead to an ugly confrontation), etc, let the law be enforced by those in law enforcement would be my suggestion. Otherwise, its possible if he crashes his car, he could file charges that you are the direct cause of him/her to lose control of the vehicle. That would be bad going to worse.

I actually scrape going out of the driveway, but not in. Same near zero speed (no momentum based loading on suspension). Can't figure out why - I think someone needs to repo my engineering degree.

I would love to see the faces of the officers when I would bring in a video of speeders here in Philadelphia. They do the best they can but they have their hands full of murder, robbery, and assaults to keep them very busy. Hell I was involved in a hit and run with my infant and elderly mother, got the license plate and make and model of the car and the cop on the side gave me the guys address since there was no way they had time to deal with it themselves.
