"Many, many of the attacks on Lott are very simple self-exculpation by non-association. Indeed, self-exculpation has been an obsession of white people since the civil rights era or before. I actually do not believe that Lott is any more of a racist than the average white American: but he seems to be one of the few white Americans who still hasn't reached a complete understanding of what you say and what you do not say."

Funny how the double standard never gets quite the airtime, but when someone like Trent Lott even by accident says something that could be remotely twisted, they're run out of town on a rail.

Bias in the press? Nah! Say it ain't so.

And for those of you junkies that just can't get enough, check out Ann Coulter's piece in TownHall. She's a firebrand, that one.

Absence of evidence is not proof. But if it's anecdotal evidence you'd like, I'd definitely be willing to make a list of race-baiting comments by party affiliation, and see who "wins".

Watch where you throw those stones. Glass is sharp.

1994 - Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich, shortly before Republicans won a majority in the House, in which he said Democrats "think it's their job to run the plantation" and that "it shocks them that I'm actually willing to lead the slave rebellion."

Re: Mayor Nagin and the Chocolate Factory

Nagin was in the news today explaining his comments.
He says blacks use the term "chocolate" all the time.
He says he has used that term many times, even in DC.
He says he does not apologize for that part of his statement.
He believes where he crossed the line was when he brought God into the statement.
He also did say he acknowledges he made mistakes during the evacuation and should have used the citie's buses to evacuate citizens.

There you have it. The latest attempt to move the foot around his mouth to a more tolerable and comfortable position.

I am not racist nor condone it. However, I saw some earlier inferences in this thread to double standards and couldn't help but raise the following points. PLEASE don't be offended and accept my apologies in advance. Would never say this to intentionally offend anyone but it is merely an observation of double standards.

Can you ever, ever imagine any of the following:
Pearl Magazine, yet there is Ebony Magazine
Miss White America, yet there is Miss Black America
White Forum, yet there is the TV show Black Forum
White Music Awards, yet there is the Black Music Awards
The list of similar examples goes on and on.

I believe there should be no tolerance to racism but why is it tolerable to reverse discriminate?

Your right Rob.We all know Thurmond was a forerunner in the battle for civil rights

successful attempts at exploiting market segmentation (and erecting entry barriers)...certainly is fodder for conversation about double standards though
(what's good for the goose indeed!)

Why should you apologize or feel guilty about pointing out the truth about double standards? Just because certian people can handle the truth about some issues doesn't make you wrong for having the stones for saying it!!

Re: Mayor Nagin and the Chocolate Factory

More then reverse racism, Im sick and tired or the double standard that says one person can use racial charged remarks to further their own political aspirations due only to the fact that they operate under SELF perpetrated illusion (with some of the American people) that they care more for this race then the other guy, when in fact they dont give a care in the world for that race any more then it will further their political future!

Yep...say something off the cuff about some older coworker on his birthday and it's racial. Definately racial.

Re: Mayor Nagin and the Chocolate Factory

Political, religous, and race threads are a lot of fun.

Everybody has an opinion.
Interesting to see how one's age also figures in to their viewpoint, be it liberal or conservative.

btw~ On the news last night, they were showing how NO has taken on a definite Hispanic flavor with all the Mexican workers that have come in to do the dirty work.

Re: Mayor Nagin and the Chocolate Factory

Joe, if you listened to the rest of the speech, and understood the context, it was simply a kind thing to say to an old man at his birthday party. I think it's worth examining how you arrive at Trent Lott being 'racist'. But if it's true racism you're after, send a note to Robert Byrd and ask him who does his sheets - they're all so crispy white.

For sure....

If one pays attention to some recent history, the Democrats for the most part voted against the civil rights act in the 60's which the Republicans sposored. Now the Democrats pander to that constituency.
