Do you remember these? - A tribute to childhood memories.

I had a set of these... we called them "Clackers."
(They had other names)
Hottest toy on the planet in 1971 - until they started shattering and causing eye injuries... flying apart and causing concussions... even one report of a fire started as a result of the "magnifying glass" affect.

Helmets? Bah! Seatbelts? Please... when I was a kid, we defied death just playing with our toys!

So how about you BOTL/SOTL? Any obscure items you remember from childhood?

Re: Do you remember these? - A tribute to childhood memories.

There was a TV Show that only lasted 6 episodes in 1977...

Dog and Cat

Starred a VERY young Kim Basinger... I was 15 and in LOVE!

She drove a VW Bug with a Porche engine.

Smashed fingers, bruised foreheads....ahh the memories!
These were fun if you put the target on two lawns across the street!

The pogo ball. I remember playing with these. Everyone on the block had one. Mine was orange and black. I got one for my son at a thrift store, he still can't use it.

Talk about dangerous toys…

I remember being allowed to play with mercury when I was a kid. If a thermometer broke we could scoot the little bead on the linoleum floor. I think we where even allowed to handle it in school as well. Oh what fun, like the character Robert Patrick play in "Terminator 2".

And don't forget about these babies, remember, "Don't point them at your brother!"

Re: Do you remember these? - A tribute to childhood memories.

These were probably my favorite toy as a kid...
actually it may be because we didn't have much money

I remember on hot days we would all roll our tire to the river (about 3 - 4 miles, jump in and swim for 30 minutes and then all roll them back to the neighborhood. About 15 minutes later someone would say "hey let's go swimming" and we would roll them back to the river for another dip.
Was probably 6 or 7 years old at the time and the only warning you ever got was "don't be late for dinner"

Re: Do you remember these? - A tribute to childhood memories.

Skateboards from a piece of wood and old (steel) rollerskate wheels before the advent of urethane wheels. That was serious cowboy riding; deadly chit on an unplanned bump. The Zectron Superball was the cat daddy of things that bounced:

SUPER BALL FACT SHEET
Research & Science Dept., Wham-O Mfg. Co.
© 1965 Wham-O Mfg. Co., 835 E. El Monte St., San Gabriel, Calif 91778 (provided courtesy of Tom Ventimiglia)

This package contains the most amazing ball ever created by science. The purpose of this sheet is to give you some answers to the many questions you will ask.

The ball itself is made from a recently developed compound called ZECTRON and compressed under 50,000 pounds of pressure. The stored energy available in this finished compound is fantastic. As you can see, the recovery (bounce) is approximately 90% - (Hold the ball out at arms length and drop it on a hard surface without moving your hand, it will almost return to the full height.) Note: Ball will not respond to light surfaces such as table tops, etc.

ZECTRON also has an extremely high coefficient of friction. (Put the ball on a clean surface, with a little downward pressure, attempt to slide the ball.) This extreme friction causes the ball to do strange things. For example, bounce the ball to someone 15 ft. to 20 ft. away with 2 bounces – you will note the ball picks up forward speed on the second bounce. Try this – bounce the ball on the floor in such a way that it strikes the wall while it is going up. The friction will cause the ball to bounce back into the wall again. In fact, tests have resulted in as many as 5 bounces into the wall with one throw. It appears that the ball is defying gravity.

If a good solid table with a flat bottom is available, throw the ball lightly so as to cause the upward bounce to strike the under side of the table. Surprisingly, the ball will bounce back to almost the same spot and then to your hand.

Caution – Super Ball is made of ZECTRON, and exotic material and must be treated with care. If ball is thrown violently or bounced excessively on rough surfaces, BALL WILL BREAK. Naturally Super Ball can’t be guaranteed against breakage. Handle with care and you will have many hours of pleasure.

SIT N SPIN
Here's a great one that I had growing up. The only point to this was to make yourself sooo dizzy you got sick. This was a great way for my parents to allow me to learn what it was like to get drunk at a very early age.

I'm pretty sure you can still buy it, but I used to love Silly Putty! In the cool red egg, I must have had a dozen of them over the years.

Oh and the Chuck Norris and the Commandos action figures, I used to have some of them. I wish I still had them. My favorite was the Chuck Norris one that you squeezed the legs together and his arms punched.
