FIRE ANTS.

i am deadly allergic to red (fire) ants. they are everywhere in florida, including my aunts backyard. when i was 13 my cousin and i were playing with the hose in the backyard when i got bit on my leg by 2 red ants. about 5 minutes later my ears starting closing up, then my throat. the next thing i remember i woke up in an ambulance!! i actually may have died if i was not treated. my eyes,ears,throat and even my armpits swelled up like mad. it sucked. found out my dad is allergic as well.

it actually kept me from a career in the US airforce. when i was 22 i wanted to join the AF. i signed up, took the test,passed and quit my job. went to the hotel where i would be taking my physical followed by my bus ride out to "lackland airforce base" for basic in good ol' texas. during my physical the old man asked me why i had checked off "bug allergies" on my paperwork. i told him i am deadly allergic to red ants. he stopped what he was doing and looked me in the face, then told me there is no way in hell i am going to be able to join the airforce!! wtf? he along with 5 other AF (including my recruiter) told me that i will get bit at least once a week by red ants during basic training. they had all been covered in them and bitten numerous times during basic. "how allergic are you?" the physical guy asks, HA, i tell him about the 2 that almost killed me.
well they told me i could lie, but if i were to die there would be no compensation etc. they gave me some time to think about it. also they told me because i had already passed the test for the AF that my scores were high enough to enlist in any of the other 3 branches, the navy trains up in michigan, or something like that..at the time i didn't really want to join any of the others, i was only interested in the AF.
i chose not to go. of course sometimes i look back and wonder if i had made the right decision. i do like to live and all, so i am sure i did. i was pretty pissed though, i had gaven up my life to join plus spent the past 5 months at the gym everyday prepping myself for basic.

i did my basic training at ft. jackson south carolina. on our first field exercise, i had to set up my shelter half on top of a fire ant hole... didn't know it cuz it was in the dark at the time. all night, i dreamt that i was scratching my shaved head, chest and arms... woke up all swollen... headed to sick call on a 5-ton truck. came back later that morning after a shot.

those little buggers burn.
