Who's watching you?
With all of the privacy, wire tapping stuff going on and now the government wants access to Google’s servers – Was it a coincidence that ABC ran the movie Enemy of the State tonight?

Re: Who's watching you?
Hell after background check in the Army for Crypto clearance, Application for CHL license, C and R FFl License and back ground checks from the job I used to have. The FBI has at least 10 sets of my prints and I am sure I am on ever list there is. Let them watch all they want, hell they now know more about me then I do.

Re: Who's watching you?
Not doing anything wrong I'm not willing to answer for so "let em look" I say.
I know it is perhaps a long shot away from my normal Conservative view on things but the most and only illegal thing I am doing (except for some occasional speeding ) is buying what most of the rest of you are so I really do not have a problem with my government having limited powers over some privacy when it is to protect us.I do think that privacy is important but not at the cost of safety for the masses. I am blessed that it is not much of an issue since I don't have much to hide. . |

Of course this only made the news because Google is fighting it. AOL, Yahoo and MSN just rolled over and gave the info without even a wimper but we would not have even known about it if Google had not stood its ground. ![]()

Re: Who's watching you?
While I have nothing to hide, I believe that goverment needs to use the tools at their disposal legally. I have also been finger printed by the ATF and other goverment agencies for my hobby (rocketry). I am surely on their radar in this day and age, and have no problem with it.

Re: Who's watching you?
It is wrong for the government to be hiding behind the verbage of "national security" and "fight against terrorism" to steal our freedom. It doesn't matter if you are "doing nothing wrong" or not. This administration believes you can be arrested and detained indefinately with no trial or access to lawyers even if you are an American citizen. Combining the two smacks of being incredibly dangerous and it is amazing that there is no more outcry at this.
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran. http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/1984/ |

I agree with you. Once we let some of our freedoms slip more and more will go away. If the goverment cant find a better way of catching criminals or terriorists other than vilotaing our freedoms than they need to step down. Its a little to convient to take our privacy away so easy. And how dare they name a movment that is hellbent on violating our freedom the "Patriot Act." ![]() Ps. I have also had many background checks on me for my job. And I have turned down a T.S clearance because I don't want the goverment in my life when I retire, no matter how much it will pay me when I get out of the navy. But, I agreed to have a background check, unlike many other people.

Re: Who's watching you?
What do you guys think that the goverment is actually searching for using search site information? Someone please give me an argument other the the slippery slope one (if this now what next?!?!? oh lord) that this is an invasion of my privacy.
I feel there is nothing wrong with taking information you already have about certain suspected people and crossmatching that with more information (ex. search site info) E |

I have nothing to hide (well... no more than most of you anyhow) but I value freedom too much to watch it be pissed away. Nazis didn't start by gassing Jews in gas chambers. They started by kicking them out of government jobs. By persecuting them. By making them wear Star of Davids. THEN after the desensitization they started wholesale slaughter. I'm not suggesting the US government is planning anything of that sort but you lose your freedom in increments. Nobody screams bloody murder when it starts ... you'll be in a police state before you know it. |

Re: Who's watching you?
Just a quick step back to reality...
Now I lean very much towards the libertarian side, and I believe it is essential for my freedom that I own enough weaponry to arm most of Europe (yeah, I know, thats 2 guns and a bottle of wine), but you guys do realize this Google thing is nothing more than what is already public information? Right? The Orwellian quotes are fantastic...though they do make the 'Ted Kennedy is a drunk murdering leech' comments seem fresh. Plus, they don't apply in this case. Jeff said the gov'ment would use the information to track you, hunt you down, and send Janet Reno to blow up your house...I don't know where in the article he got that, but it plainly stated nothing of the sort would happen. The gov'ment is simply looking for a survey of what sites are searched and what search terms are used. If you want to debate why we are making more anti-**** laws...fine by me. But this is not, by any means, an invasion of privacy. Theres a lot more to our rights and freedoms than Roe v. Wade. |
