Question What type of heater do I need?

Ok, winter is right around the corner and I really don't want to bundle up under layers of clothes, a stocking cap and cloves to brave the cold so I can smoke my stogie!! I always end up wasting about half the cigar just to avoid frost bite. So this year I'm thinking, after some inspiration from several pictures on this board, of turning half my garage into my man cave. That being said, first things first. I need heat. Something that can heat up the garage fairly quickly and will only be utilized maybe 3 times a week for a couple of hours. Does anybody have any ideas as to the best heater for this task? Thanks.

One of these:

or these:

will work great. The first is rapid heat but puts out some noise. The second is quiet - but takes longer to heat up.

Ron,
Could you tell us what the second heater is? I can't see any brand in the picture.

Re: What type of heater do I need?

This is what I use can be pulled out on to the patio, I put in in the gazebo and if the ceiling is high enough in the garage will heat it great! I bought it at lowes, I think around $200 and it is pretty darn quiet. Businesses use them if people are out side when its nipply, I think it will heat a 20' area outside, no wind and something a bit more insulated like a garage I am sure it will do a 3- 4 car garage no problem. Runs on propane, the only problem I have had is sometime with long use in the cold the tank froze up, but I always have a spare (grill tanks).

I believe that one is a Duraheat. I was really just trying to show types and not really brands - most of them work the same. In the first pic, that's an AllPro, but Reddy Heat is really popular also and one that we use at work.

Both of them start at around 180 ish - but I'm sure with a little searching they can be found for less. BTU's of course really affects the price range.

If you are using a propane heater, be sure you have some sort of ventilation. Carbon Monoxide with do more than affect the flavor of your smokes!

Re: What type of heater do I need?

I would avoid the kerosene heaters, they give off foul fumes that will affect your cigar. I would go with a good electric heater, it will take awhile to heat up but no fumes. The propane has alot less fumes but still gives off some.

I'd go electric or get an oil heater.

[SIZE=3]This is exactly what I am thinking of using in my garage this year. My dad uses one in the icehut and it works great, in fact its too dam hot sometimes.

As for fumes or smell, I never noticed a drop with this.

It gets damn cold here, like in the -20 celcius range and I still think this will be enough for the garage smoking this winter. Plus it helps to positive pressure your garage so it will help push the smoke out.

If you're heating up indoors. Avoid heaters that actively burn stuff (gas, kerosine, propane) and DO NOT have an own exhaust you can route outside.

I used all kind of heaters inside, but i had some very bad experiences with those propane heaters depicted here. Even with a window cracked the fumes can be very BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH.

So go with an electrical one (I'm using a 400V one in the garage) or go with a gasburner (using one in the warehouse) with external exhaust.
Dependent on your garage size, (<100m3) you could even manage with a small electrical heater with a fan in it. Just turn it on 30 min in advance.

Radiator like heaters (those oil filled ones for example) take a long ass time to heat up a room. Use a regular (box) fan to get some hot air flowing.

And this 'll do the job easily!:

3.3kW, 230V

Re: What type of heater do I need?

I have heard those heaters that run on corn supposedly do great.
