flying lessons

so i went to a little airport and went up on a discover flight thing.

well long story short i have fallen in love with it. yeah one flight who knew. problem being i cant afford the cost. (being a college student sucks)

do any of the members here fly? also does anyone know of a way to pay for such things on a loan like a student loan? could i use one of these? how would one go about using a student loan for such expenses if possible?

Thanks for any help

Brad

Re: flying lessons

I know my student loans were just given to me in check form, I deposited it to my account, and I was able to use it for whatever I wanted. Now, legally, what you can use those loans for is mandated by the lender. Some say they are to be used for anything, other say you can only use it for books, tuition, housing, food, transport, or related costs. So look around, see what you can find. Hope this helps.

I have a private pilot's license but it was a lot cheaper when I learned how to fly...I'm rated in Cessna's, the 172, 182, and 206...I think you can get a student loan for flight training if you want to go go through IFR, multi-engine, and commercial, then go for your CFI or CFII if you want to be a pilot or flight instructor...what are you studying for in college?

Re: flying lessons

One of my goals in life to do before I die is to learn how to fly small aircraft. Hopefully after I graduate and my wife and I get established, I'll be able to afford and pursue that dream.

IFR...istrument flight rules...as opposed to VFR...visual flight rules...and yep, it's costly...my next flight lesson is gonna be in a helicopter as I always wanted to fly one...but I still have trouble with the cyclic/collective concept in the flight sims I've used...maybe it will be easier in a real one...

Re: flying lessons

I've been flying since I was 12. Solo'ed at 16 and got my license at 17. Since then, I've picked up my multiengine and instrument rating. Aviation is such a part of who I am that I decided to make it my career. I've also recently taken the plunge and bought an aircraft. 1977 Piper Turbo Arrow III.

Since you're on a tight budget, I'd recommend making a real commitment to getting your license quickly. The more time and energy you commit to it, the faster (and cheaper) you can get your ticket. If you fly only a few hours a month, you'll quickly forget alot of your training and you'll spend a great deal of each lesson re-learning rather than progressing in your training.

There are quite a few flight schools that allow students to finance their flying. At least there are out here in Northern California.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

Chris

Re: flying lessons

When I was in law school I really wanted to get my license as well. I went up in a cessna in high school and thought it was just an awesome experience. I began reading AOPA (I think that is what the initials were) magazine. I realized I just didn't have the finances or time to get the license nor did I foresee having the finances to maintain the license in the near future. Who knows...maybe someday in the future I'll actually do it. Until then, I'm stuck with flight simulator.
