I am no expert in this area but I remember watching a special on this on the Military Channel.
This is the Joint Strike Fighter (US Marine version), the requirement was for vertical and takeoff landings. Pretty freaking sweet.

Our (US) inventory of fighter jets was becoming outdated and there is another country [spec-wise] that has a superior jet. I am guessing the F22 and F35 are our responses. Check out the flight demos of the Su37, wicked!

While I love seeing stuff like this, I do wonder what do we need it for? Nearly nothing could touch an F15. These make F15s look like the Red Barons bi plane.

I'm guessing because it can take off and land in such a small area..... probably many ways to utilize that feature

F-22 replacing the F-15 and F-117. F-117 already retired.
F-35 replacing F-16, F-18, Harrier. There will be an Air Force, Navy, and Marine version of the JSF(F-35), Marine version will have the VTOL capability. Here is a pic of the Harrier hovering- you can see from the exhaust.(Indianapolis 2006)

Yes, it is the JSF from Lockheed Martin. There will be 3 variations, conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL), short-takeoff and vertical-landing (STOVL), carrier-based (CV).

Actually Lockheed is our customer (I work directly as quality engineer/delegated source inspector), and we are currently building tubes (for oil, fuel and air) for the 3 variants.

This is a very strong program, and it has been pretty cool working on this project. I have several customers assigned to me, and this one has recently replaced Gulfstream as the top priority .

I would really like to eventually be able to visit the final facility to be able to see how these are assembled, but for regulatory ITAR issues I dont know if that could happen
