Can't really respond to that one Rob, as I don't believe we are a true republic, more of a democratic-republic. And i think we have the amendments to the constitution to thank for that (especially good ole 17)

And on that note, I am done with this thread

Thankfully there is no spot in here for me.

I reject at all costs any attempt to classify myself along these lines. Here is my personal philosophy:

I reject absolutely anything that appeals to greed or fear.
I am for mercy above justice
I am for pragmatism over idealism
I strive to be more concerned with others than myself

I have found that it becomes impossible to think for myself the moment my mind closes to any possibility. For this reason, I have never found it beneficial to align myself completely with any particular movement, or philosophy.

interesting article in the NY times yesterday that relates...
It's safe to assume you've created God in YOUR image when he hates the same people you do.

I wish I could remember where that quote came from.
    The original quote is:

"The man who is not a socialist at twenty has no heart, but if he is still a socialist at forty he has no head." -- Aristide Briand

It has been paraphrased by many.

    Re: Classify Yourself Politically

Alignment on a political axis is problematic. First it is not static. (Well, at least hopefully one is not so ossified of mind that they can not learn, reflect, and modify their position. However, some folks mentally die very young)
Second it is not two dimensional. That is, right to left. There is too much else going on within value systems to reduce it so simply.

I didn't vote either. Here is a fairly good analysis of the multi dimensional aspect. There is even a test.

Also, cognitive scientist, turned talking head/political consultant hack, George
Lakoff, wrote and excellent book on the issue as well; Moral Politics. He should stick to science.

Oh, no you're not. Don't you even think you can get away with a drive-by and not engage the discussion.

Take a look at the link I posted re: Republic vs. Democracy. I think it might ring true for you, and get you thinking along different lines. Or not. I'm also interested to hear how you correlate Amendment 17 to this.

I am a young college kid attending an extremely liberal university. Having said that, I am in the minority. I "found" myself politically after I graduated high school and started college in addition to the 2004 election process.

I love and listen to Glenn Beck daily, pro-life, pro-government, capitalism rules, Saddam sucks, etc.

I'm not a wacko, but I'll leave it at that.

Well the world's become entirely too complex for me to vote on the issues so I take stock of the man and vote accordingly. As far as Presidents I will vote for the man who inspires the military and pays regular homage to the military. That pretty much eliminates anyone in the democrat party from consideration.

Gotta go with some Moderation these days.
Basically a relationship will survive not based on how well you get along, but by how well you don’t get along. A couple is only as “strong” as how well the two individuals can deal with their weakest moments together.

I guess that would depend on your definition of the "best candidate". I think the "best candidate" is the one that agrees with the majority of the principles that I believe in and will represent those principles. If that means I vote a straight ticket, then I do - if that means I'm voting for those who will represent my views. Too many people vote for the "best candidate" really because they make them feel good. They are good candidate because they "care about the children, the rich, the poor, the middle class, the elderly, the animals, the trees, the corporations, etc." I like to think that I will vote based on my principles and my views are probably not represented by just one party either. Maybe the majority of my views are represented by one party, but not all.

I'm a moderate that votes based on my personal convictions, not along some political parties lines. If you lean too far in either direction you become blind to whats right and what's wrong.
