Any Sherlock Holmes Fans?

I am asking for your advice.
I was, up until recently, active on another forum. I started a thread where I was writing a Sherlock Holmes short story, with a chapter a day.
The story is about Sherlock and Dr. Watson solving a case where the main clues are a couple of cigar butts found outside the crime scene.
I was having a good time writing it and got to chapter 4. Was getting a lot of positive feedback on it until a couple of guys decided to jump in, rewrite it as a perverted, really crude, story - and when I objected, they went bananas.
I was not able to take all the insults and crudeness any more and found this site which I am thrilled to be on.
Here's my question - I think the story is worth reading, certainly amateurish but fun. I've read all the Sherlock Holmes stories and think you might enjoy my attempt at writing my own rendition.
Does something like that fit in on this forum? Would there be interest in it?
Please let me know. Thanks very much. Bob

I don't see why not... I think this forum would likely be the right place for it: Everything but Cigars, that sounds like an everything but cigars topic.

Here was something similar, not really the same, but similar.

Go for it. Im sure people will jump in and enjoy it as well. And, as you have already stated your dislike for the turn that the story took elsewhere, anyone who disregards that (in my opinion) deserves a swift kick to a delicate area. I doubt that will even be an issue here though. Welcome to CS.

I say go for it. Of course, I'm a huge Holmes fan (as well as pretty much all 19th Century detective fiction).

I say, Silver, does the great one smoke cigars in this bit of prose, rather than his perennial pipe?

Re: Any Sherlock Holmes Fans?

Nope, he smokes his pipe, its the evidence that revolves around the discovered cigars.

Re: Any Sherlock Holmes Fans?

Sherlock Who?

Just kidding, but remember, Holmes more frequently dug out a cigar than a pipe. He smoked cigarettes and if joints had been available I'm sure he would have experimented. I've read the complete set several times and my advice is pay a lot of attention to detail and style. Doyle had some good plots but enough of his were mediocre but he carried them with style and detail. We'll be watching.

Steve:
Here's some detail for your quote --------

How it got in there, I'll never know. The rest of the groucho quote! one of my favorites.

Can't promise perfect accuracy but I'll try.
Did you read any of the books written by a guy in St. Paul, I can't remember his name, who did 6 novels of Sherlock and Dr. Watson coming to USA and working with a Detective Rafferty? Not too bad. I got one book that was a modern Sherlock called Sherlock in Love. Oh, man was that bad. Falls in love with a woman who turns out to be his sister. It was a major P.U.

Re: Any Sherlock Holmes Fans?

I read "The Seven Percent Solution" by Nikolas Meyer which was decent until they made of movie of it. Then it was like finding out there is no Santa Claus.
I've kinda been a purist toward Holmes because if you wait about 7 years between reads each time you get a new take on it.

Re: Any Sherlock Holmes Fans?

You might want to skip my attempt, since I am just an amateur and trying to have some pleasant time writing. Certainly not up to, nor trying to be up to, the level of the pros.
Consider it just a fun ditty, not a true orchestration. Although I am doing my best to make it entertaining.
Chapter one tomorrow morning.

Re: Any Sherlock Holmes Fans?

I'm no Sherlock Holmes expert, but I did get drunk at his namesake pub by Trafalgar square. I'll see if I have pictures (of the pub, not me drunk).

I'm looking forward to reading it!
