Gidday everyone. Well a small update on the situation.

After being told Friday that I was being made redundant on Friday I pretty much spent the weekend thinking all sorts of things from F@#ing W@%&ers to what the hell am I gonna do now. Doubt sets in, panick all the things you would expect as you think about the young family you have etc etc.

Monday I went into work, I had cleaned off my PC and cleaned up their car over the weekend, resigned to tha fact that I wasn't going back. I had a meeting with the GM in the morning and at about 4:00pm I had another meeting with the GM and my Manager, basically to see if I could fathom WTF was going on. I was very amicable, something they appreciated very much, as I did not want to burn any bridges and really there was no point in getting bent out of shape about it.

The end deal was I got 11 weeks severence pay, 4 weeks in leiu of notice and what annual leave pay I had owing. Just to explain, here in Australia you get an allowance of 4 weeks annual leave (vacation leave0 per year. You actually get paid your normal wages when on leave. The 4 weeks in leiu option was I could work the 4 weeks or leave know and still get paid the 4 weeks... duh whaddya think I'm gonna do. I exercised my option to leave then and their, which they were fine with.

Funny thing was, it was at about 3:00pm on Monday (an hour before the last meeting) that I noticed the change in myself. I was more relaxed, my back muscles had not felt so relaxed in I can't remember how long. I was happier. I was reading a story to Skylar when I put her to bed and I was reading it with purpose, not trying to rush it through, I was making up voices for the characters in the storey, it was great. All this was happening despite the fact that my future was still uncertain. People were noticing a change in me.

Anyway, while all this was going on I had put in calls to a number of contacts. One was a guy who works for a company who does a loy of work for my now former employer. He was quite shocked. This was on the Friday that i found out. He called me Saturday, the next day, and said we may have some casual work for you to tie you over when can you come in, I said how about Wednesday, give me time to sort myself on Tuesday.
So today I went in and spent the day working for these guys. Atmosphere was great, people are happy (makes a change) and they're keen to teach and learn (that's teach me new stuff or learn new stuff from me). Seems they may be keen to keep me on but will have to wait and see, pay will be a little less but I can live with that at the moment.

I'm still keeping my options open, but now I have time to breathe.
I just want to say again, thank you to everyone here for the support you have shown in this thread. Their were a couple of times when I didn't actually log on, but read and re-read this thread to help me through a couple of tough moments. My family are my life and their were times when I just didn't know what I would do but you guys got me to think straight and keep my chin up and I cannot express what that has meant to me.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now

Cheers
Jason

P.S. Did I sy this was gonna be a small update???

Re: Redundant

That's great Jason! Now you can actually find that career that you really want, and still make ends meet. The severance and temp work will keep you going while you make those grandiose plans. As has been said, friends and help are only a click away.

Re: Redundant

Glad to hear the situation is improving already. That didn't take long. Head for that light at the end of the tunnel, light is good.

Isn't that the best feeling? I was shocked myself at how good I started to feel when I left my job. A few days later when I went to the hospital for a formal interview I couldn't believe how normal and happy everyone was. It actually got me excited to work again. Good stuff Jason, whatever happens I think you'll be just fine bro. Keep us updated on everything and again if there's ever anything we can do to help just let us know.

After I reread that a little while I realized it didn't come out right...or at least ot the way I meant it to sound. It should have sounded a little something like:

"Tasmania is a fast growing region, and skilled jobs are in a huge shortage. The job market here is really good, in case you decided to relocate someplace a little closer to home."

Sorry if my first post sounded a little snobby, Jason......

No worries at all mate, that is exactly how I read and understood it. In fact the snobby factor didn't even enter my mind.
