GM breaks up with Tiger Woods

Even Tiger Woods is getting laid off.

They didn't disclose how much he was paid, but I bet it was in the millions. I wonder if celebrity endorsements are really worth it, or an excuse for a write off.

I read an article yesterday froma different source which claimed that Tiger was making somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 Million a year, plus an obvious troop of Buick merchandise (cars).

It also mentioned that GM is dropping a lot of the sponsorships and free rentals for PGA events themselves.

I don't think there was any excuse, GM just doesn't have any money. Certain marketing dollars are going to have to be cut, and my guess is that Tiger is one of the bigger marketing line items that is hard to justify when you are facing bankruptcy,

I remember reading that he had to be in a Buick to and from tournaments, as per the contract. Also, any car he won he gave to Steve, his caddie. The title would say "Tiger Woods" as owner and Steve would sell the car and the money would go to charity. There was something about Tiger not, under contract, being allowed to receive the cars as part of his sponsorship arraingement.

I'm not sure what Tiger was paid by GM but unless it was 100M per year it was probably worth it. Tiger practically drove the Buick brand the last 5 years and his presence is hugely important in the far east. Buick is the fastest growing brand in China period and Tiger has been given a lot of credit for that. The breakup was a combination of Tiger wanting more money and a smaller time commitment...basically he wanted more for less work.

How long until Lexus signs a deal with Tiger?

Poor, Poor, Tiger... I think that I heard that NIKE has also broken up with him.... (pretty sure the report said it was mutual.. but lets be honest) He's kinda like the star athlete that gets dumped by the head cheerleader before the prom!

He's designing a golf course for the Cliffs. I imagine a house there is part of the deal but he probably won't live there year 'round.
