Insurance help!!!!

My Mother forgot to send the payment for my Dad's insurance which is due today. They told her they wouldn't accept payment which would cancel his policy. He is using cobra insurance because he left his job with the illness. He has cancer and is going through chemo again, but without insurance I don't know what he will do. He doesn't have enough meds to last the week not to mention the chemo and all that goes with it and we are BROKE. Is there anything we can do as far as making the inurance company keep his policy?? This is a big emergency

What was the reason for not accepting payment? Is there a local office that will take money order?

Where are you, where are they? No possibility of driving there to pay? Can you wire payment? If you next day it next business morning they will cancel the policy? Ask to speak to a supervisor and ask the same questions. Get names on the phone.

They are in Arizona I am in Arkansas. She called today and to arrange some kind of payment wire, next day. they told her it was too late and wouldn't accept it. I don't know all the details yet. I will talk to her this afternoon.

Kev, that sucks. I know in SC Auto insurance you have a 10 day grace period. Not sure about health insurance though. I also don't know if this is just a SC thing or if it is country wide. Maybe look at your state laws regarding insurance company regs.

Sounds like the insurance company is going to find any out they can to get away from coughing up the dough for chemo and such. I really hope everything turns out well, that's

I hope everything goes okay. Aside from battling with these folks on the phone and trying to wire the money (which should be a possibility, why wouldn't it?), I don't know much else you can do but I hope everything works out, Kev.

If you are able to make the payment over the phone today, then they should be able to accept it. How about a debit?

If they refuse to cooperate, call your state insurance commissioner's office. They should be able to at least tell you whether or not you have any recourse, & they might be able to help you with the insurance company directly.

I just got off the phone with my Mom. Apparently the payment was due on the 1st of nov. She had a 30 grace period to make the payment and forgot. Yesterday would have been the last day to pay. They told her if she sent the payment they would send it back. I don't know what we will do from here. I am in shock at the moment and thinking clearly about what to do isn't working.

Are they medicare eligible? It's open enrollment and can apply for a Medicare Advantage plan (**if they have parts A & B). When you enroll in a MA plan there are no medical questions other than "do you have end stage renal desease?"

I sold MA plans for 6 months...typically in my experience Human has some really good plans with a Part D included. It will probably be cheaper to go with a MA plan than keep paying for the COBRA.

I don't know if the problem is solved but I am hoping the if the payment is sent before the due date it will be ok. I have a friend at the post office who said he would stamp it for Nov 29. Cross your fingers for me that it will suffice.

Hi Kev,,,,have seen this before with others and the problem as you already know it is that the "Grace Period" has been compromised because of non payment. However, there are things you still can do but it will take some initiative on your part to help her. Since you are helping her call the insurance people first and talk with them so that you have a paper trail and get names,,always get names and talk with supervisors. If they give you the "Grace period has ended we're sorry routine" get in touch with a lawyer in the area and talk with TV stations ( the ones that invite you to contact them when you can't resolve issues ) seems as though insurance companies don't like negative PR and they suddenly become willing to listen and help out when they get "dinged" with a TV involved story about how they screwed over an elderly man undergoing chemo.

I have reported bad things that a builder was doing and tried to screw us over and when I called the TV station they contacted the builder and 'suddenly' my issues were resolved.
