RH and Acoustic guitars

Anyone else play guitar here? I recently bought a nice Guild DV-4 all solid wood guitar. Humidity levels for solid woods without a laminate finish should stay at around 40-50%. Its funny using a humidifier and reading a hygrometer inside a case without picking out a cigar to smoke. Ha. yea this thread is pointless, but hey I had some extra time today.

Re: RH and Acoustic guitars

I play guitar and have had numerous accoustics (although all I have are electrics now). I have never worried too much about the humidity. I live in Atlanta and the weather is pretty moderate, and I've even been known to leave my guitars out in the car on some pretty cold (relatively speaking) nights before. I would be more worried if I had a very old, prized guitar but I had a 10 year old Gibson Accoustic for a while and the weather/humidity did not seem to affect it very much.

Re: RH and Acoustic guitars

Yeah... I'm a guitarist. The current acoustic roster includes:

Martin D76
Breedlove AC25-SR
Parkwood 320M w/ iBeam active pickup installed
Taylor 114ce
Ovation Celebrity CC48
Yamaha SG-460S 12A (12 String)
some old C.G.Conn
and a Crossroads Customs Cigar Box Guitar

...and I think that's it.

I actually got some of Shilala's beads (which you can set however you want) in a couple of my cases. If you live in a place that goes through severe humidity changes (i.e. upstate NY) it's good to keep an eye on RH. More importantly, though, the guitar stand should only be used for breaks while playing... aside from that it should always be in the case.

I love it now... the initial positioning was a mid nightmare... couldn't hear anything else (these things are damned picky). Now though, it's stellar. I use this guitar primarily for fingerstyle.

Here's a sample of how it (and the pickup) sounds:

Re: RH and Acoustic guitars

i had a 1980 vintage Rickenbacker 4001 bass... i used to store at my parents house in their basement. Its a neck through... so everytime i'd come home and play it i would notice something about the twang on the frets... depending on whether or not they had the dehumidifier on in the basement or not...

Sidenote - i bought that guitar for 900.00 right before it went vintage.. .sold it for 600.00 because i'm a moron.. .that was 6-7 years ago when i was 18-19....

Now that year bass in the rare finish that i had is going for 2-3k on ebay...

Sheesh

Re: RH and Acoustic guitars

I repositioned mine as well. Got a bit better. It all depends on what I'm pushing it through. I have a ultrasound acoustoc amp and the two don't play well together.

Re: RH and Acoustic guitars

I listened to a few of your Vids. Very cool. I am a big fan of fingerstyle guitar and 2 handed tapping. I took lessons from Billy Mac for a while.

I love my cut capo and could'nt live without it.

Re: RH and Acoustic guitars

I am a drummer and a guitar player. I have a Martin D3-R, a Guild acoustic that I bought last year, a 20 year old Yamaha, a Fender acoustic, a Pearl Export Pro drum set and a Tama Rock Deep Pro Maple set.

I had a problem with humidity on my Guild. It dried so bad that it could not be played. I took it into the shop and the owner told me that unlike the older guitars, they do not wait for the wood to season. The older guitars that I have never had the problem. They repaired my Guild and sold me a humidifier that fits in between the strings while the guitar is in the case. I haven't had the problem since.

Yea I brought my guild to a shop it had a small crack in it from drying out I guess. I bet it happened from hanging high up on the wall in the store I bought it from. Heat rises and they should have had a seperate room for acoustics with a controlled atmosphere. But they covered up the crack no problem and gave me a humidifier that goes in the strings as well.

So post a video! I'd definitely be interested in checking it out.
