Think about what gift cards you give this season

Well i got this FWD email today. Some of the closing i have been told about some i have not. Just trying to warn people to watch out where they get gift cards at this year. Here is the email.

Here's a heads up, if you are planning to give gift cards around the holidays. You need to be careful that the cards will be honored after the holidays. Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though the cards will be worthless, come January 1st. There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankruptcy Planning'. Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about.

This happened at Sharper Image. A couple of months before they went out of business, they stopped taking their own gift cards.

I would not want to be working behind the counter and have to tell a customer a gift card would not be accepted. Must have sucked for their employees who were losing their jobs anyway.

Great reminder! It would suck to receive something that's no longer valid. I think that some of the retailers like Gap, Home Depot and Macys are safe to buy gift cards from since they're only closing some stores. That is, unless your recipient doesn't live in an urban/suburban are where there are tons of locations.

I could not even believe having to do that. If i worked there i would leave as soon as they asked me to do that. I went shopping in the afternoon of blackfriday and all i can say is wow. people are ruthless.
