Life's Little Twists and Turns
So life can deliver some strange blows, twists and truns. Just over a week ago I was made redundant from my job, which I'm sure most of you are aware of.
You may also remember that I was doing soe casual work for a company that also does a lot of work for my former company. Well, I'm still their, in fact now permanant as of today. This morning I had an interview with another company which I had applied for about a week ago. Because the company I am working for at the moment was also interested in keeping me on, I made sure they new what I was doing and they were cool with it. So I go for this interview, which was for the position of Broadband Supervisor, and was intervied by a lady. She sits down in the meeting room and the first thing that she says to me is, "So they call you Iceman!!" And I looked at her kinda shocked and not sure what to say, and I said where did you hear that. Apparently their are about 4 guys from a company called Visionstream working their, we all used to work together back in the mid to late 90's. They nicked named me Iceman cause they thought I looked like Val Kilmer. OK people, you can make fun of me, but I didn't make it up... they did So any how they all sang my praises and it also turned out that they guy I would be replacing should I get the job used to work as a contractor for my former employer, so he too sang my praises. Needless to say I got a phone call this afternoon from this lady telling me the job was mine. I had already told her in the interview that the place I was working at at the moment wanted to keep me on and that I would discuss with them in further detail what they were going to offer me. So I sat down with them and told them I had been offered this job and what the package was. They matched the package as well as said that I can have away work as well. This company does comms systems for mining companies in the outback and when you travel away you actually get paid about twice your normal wage because of it. They are also going to train me up and add to my knowledge and skills so they can make me their tech kinda guy as most of the other guys know how to do mostly just one thing. So I had to phone this lady back and say I was staying where i was for the time being. She said that was cool and she will hang on to my Resume just incase. Man, one day I'm redundant and in a complete panick and the next thing I know is I got two companies chasing me. I have never had that before. Now I'm complaining because I got made redundant and only got one day off work between jobs... I'm kidding, it's great to be back working. Even though I never really stopped. But I'm loving this new job.

Re: Life's Little Twists and Turns
Forgot to mention that this is why I haven't been here much the last few days. Trying to get myself settled and get my timimg right. No chance to get to CS during work, to bloody busy for that. Also gotta get some ashtrays finished for people who have been waiting sooooo patiently (thank you). In fact just gonna update the ashtray thread now and then go do some work on some.

Re: Life's Little Twists and Turns
Must be the Val Kilmer look.
People used to tell me that I looked like Al Pacino, but he turned out kinda homely. A local elderly librarian tells me I look like Mel Torme. I told her Mel kinda looks like a frog & she just smiled. ![]()

That's great news Jason! I knew this was going to work out. Hard workers are tough to come by and worth their weight in gold.

Re: Life's Little Twists and Turns
Of course, as outside observers, and knowing you as well as the internet can offer, we were all confident you'ld be on top soonest. It'll be fun when your former company tries to call you back. It sounds like the job and training are a perfect fit. Congratulations jason! Woop, Woop!!

Step 1 - Jason figures out he's a pretty special guy that employers are going to fight over and feels better about things after getting a better job than he had. (Check) Step 2 - Jason "Get's the call". Former employer is going to call at some point in time after your last day there. They are going to need you for something. Be ready with a fair consulting rate but make the minimum billable 5 years. (The equivalent of a fair severance). J/K - sort of. Seems bridges you built in the past are your path to the future. Congratulations Jason. Good things happen to skilled, diligent and most importantly... nice people. |
