Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

The Remmys are really nice. If I were looking at a 700 I'd prolly opt for the LTR. Guys are getting out to 1000 no problem with the short tube. I had two PSS's (one in 308 and one in 223) that I had Hart rifles tweak a bit. They were great shooters. Eventually I "moved up" to a GAP rifle and it's freakin' unbelievable....

yeah, yeah, I know I have to paint the scope, but I just can't seem to do it...

For AR's I like building my own. BUT I do have a RRA DCM rifle that John Holliger built the upper. The RRA DCM is probably the best rifle for starting Hipower with. I love mine.

I second that, I don't know squat about shooting. Haven't fired a weapon in years, other than at ground hogs on my sisters farm. This thread has been fascinatiing. Congrats Shawn.

I did have one thing confirmed for me in this thread about Savage being good weapons. I always see them for much less than other brands. Am I correct for assuming this?

Small world indeed!

Yep. Savage makes a great stick for the money, especially with their new trigger. If you're on a budget (and who isn't?) Savage is always a good way to go. They may not be as pretty as a Rem-chester, but the money you save on the rifle will let you buy a LOT more ammo for practice.

Just make sure you DON'T skimp on the optics! You can't hit what you can't see. The least expensive scope I'd go for is the SS10x42M from SWFA (you can't call it a Tasco anymore...Tasco doesn't sell 'em anymore, heck they never made 'em to begin with). I had one on my PSS and for the money it was hard to beat. I believe there's a group buy on 'em right now at ar15.com

I have a Winchester model 70 featherweight in 270 WSM. Plenty accurate for my needs. If I can't see the game with the naked eye, I don't care to shoot. I use a scope, but never shoot past about 250 yds. I read where Winchester 70s and 94s are now no longer made. Better get em while we can.

Leupolds are available everywhere and have a wide range of systems to choose from. I've got a U.S. Optics ST-10 on my .308... another excellent choice. Nightforce makes an awesome package. There are enough choices out there to make your life complicated. Choose whatever scope fits your needs and the options you're looking for... not what a bunch of internet yahoos tell you.

(Lapua cases extensively prepped, BR-2 primers, Sierra 175gr MKs and 44.4gr Varget. But I'm not suggesting a load or anything.)

Dang dude, you Know Gunny Hatchkock personally?

Last time I shot a rifle was in 1999. M16 rifle qual at Camp Pendleton. Not tooting my own horn but I was a 3 time award expert on the M16. It's not much to brag about as getting expert isn't that hard.

Winchester is no longer making the model 94, don't know about the 70.

I agree..there should be a gun section for CS.AS for a gun..you everthink of a Springfield M1a National match grade..that would be a sweet rifle. http://www.springfield-armory.com/pr...national.shtml

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

As far as groups with the GAP stick...

With Bh 175 I'm getting about 1/2 MOA (usually a little less) at 200 shooting prone over an ALICE. At least that's what it was last time I shot it...

The SA's are nice rifles, but not the optimal platform for a "precision" rifle. The AR-10 is rapidly gaining favor as THE semi sniper rifle. I have an M1A that I got last year. I took it to a local guy for some tweaking. The guy I took it to is Charles Maloney and he builds one HELL of a M1A (he was an armorer for the AMU, builds rifles for the NSA and Ft. Meade special response teams, 10th Mt. div, etc. He was the head smith at Fulton for years and basically taught Clint how to do it. He also used to be a consultant for SA). He told me that the SA QC has gone WAAAY down. The often hire high schoolers part time to be factory assemblers, and all too often if a part doesn't fit, they grab a mallet and "make it fit".

Anyway, if you're looking at a M14 platform, I'd look at a LRB. They make sweet sticks.

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

I would go for a Model 700 PSS, McMillan stock, harris bipod, and maybe a Leupold MK4 scope. The PSS stock are just fine but the McMillan are very nice. These guys below have their sh!@ squared away and know their stuff. Colonel Chandler and Gunny Hathcock worked together for years. Colonel Chandler is a great guy.RJT
